Properties and Rules

The Namekian Dragon Balls are considerably larger than Earth's set, roughly the size of basketballs. They were originally created by Grand Elder Guru, the oldest living Namekian and patriarch of the Namekian people. After Guru's death and subsequent revival, the role of maintaining the Dragon Balls passed to Elder Moori, who later upgraded them.

When all seven are gathered, the user must speak the summoning phrase in the Namekian language to call forth Porunga, the Namekian Eternal Dragon. Unlike Earth's Shenron, Porunga can grant three wishes per summoning. However, the original version had a key limitation: each wish could only revive one person at a time. Moori later removed this restriction, allowing mass resurrections with a single wish.

The Namekian Dragon Balls also differ from Earth's set in their recharge period. They require 130 days (the length of a Namekian year) before they can be used again, compared to Earth's one-year cooldown. The balls are tied to the life of their creator; if the creator dies, the Dragon Balls become inert stone spheres until a new guardian takes over.

Role in the Series

The Namekian Dragon Balls drove the entire Namek Saga, with multiple factions racing to collect them. Frieza sought immortality, Vegeta wanted the same for himself, and the Z Fighters hoped to revive their fallen friends. The conflict over these orbs led to some of the most consequential battles in the series, including Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation.

After Namek's destruction, the surviving Namekians relocated to Earth temporarily, and Dende eventually became Earth's new Guardian. However, the Namekian Dragon Balls remained on New Namek with the relocated Namekian population. They were used again during the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga when the villain Moro, aided by Cranberry, gathered the Namekian Dragon Balls and used his wishes to restore his magical power and free all prisoners from the Galactic Patrol prison. Moro then killed Cranberry to prevent him from using the third wish.
