Fanning the Flame

Manga ChapterCh. 13

Goku delivers Chi-Chi to Master Roshi only to discover that the legendary Bansho Fan has been lost to a kitchen accident. Unwilling to leave Fire Mountain burning, the old hermit agrees to handle the blaze himself, though his price is the kind of lecherous bargain that will define him for years to come.

A Painful Introduction

Inside Kame House, Goku presents Chi-Chi to Master Roshi, who promptly complains that he would have preferred Bulma because of her larger chest and muses that the name Chi-Chi might suit her better instead. Unconvinced this wrinkled old man is the famed martial arts master, Chi-Chi flings the blade from her helmet to test him. Roshi barely turns in time to raise his cane, which the blade slices clean through before lodging in his skull. He produces his driver's license to prove his identity, and Chi-Chi apologizes while yanking the weapon free, drawing a fresh howl of pain.

The Missing Fan

When Goku asks to borrow the Bansho Fan, Roshi rummages through the house in vain. Turtle sheepishly admits he had been using the treasured artifact as a potholder and tossed it out after spilling wonton soup on it. Undeterred, Roshi declares he will travel to Fire Mountain in person and extinguish the flames himself. Before they leave, he takes Goku aside and privately sets the price for his help: a chance to fondle Bulma when they arrive.

Return by Baby Gamera

Goku and Chi-Chi lift off on the Flying Nimbus, and Roshi summons the flying Baby Gamera to carry him back to the mainland. By the time the old hermit touches down at Fire Mountain alongside the waiting group, the bumpy ride has left him dizzy and queasy, and he stumbles off the giant turtle only to immediately retch, a humbling arrival for one of the strongest men alive.
