The Big Sleep

Manga ChapterCh. 49

Unable to land a clean hit, Jackie Chun resorts to a trick that sends Goku straight to sleep in the middle of the ring. A desperate shout from the stands saves the boy, and an impromptu game of Rock Paper Scissors forces the disguised master to reach for his hidden trump card.

A Lullaby in the Arena

Picking up moments after the Crazy Monkey turned the tide, Jackie Chun presses forward only to have every strike slip past. Goku meets each attempt with the same wild primate style and steadily pushes his opponent back. Realizing that a straight exchange no longer favors him, Jackie drops his guard entirely and begins waving his hands in slow mesmeric patterns while humming a soft lullaby across the ring. The move is the Sleepy Boy Technique, and within seconds Goku collapses into a peaceful heap on the ring floor as if someone had flipped a switch in his head.

Is That Even Legal

The announcer hesitates, uncertain whether a hypnotic song really counts as martial arts in an official tournament. Jackie insists that anything with a proper Chinese name qualifies, and the count begins. Yamcha, Krillin, Bulma, and the rest of the crew shout from the sidelines trying to rouse the sleeping fighter, but Goku does not even twitch on the tile.

Saved by Dinner

With the count climbing toward ten, Bulma lets loose a panicked yell of "dinner time" at the top of her lungs. The single phrase punches straight through the hypnosis where shouted names and warnings could not. Goku snaps awake and bolts to his feet, frantically scanning the ring for food. Told he will only eat after the match ends, he decides to wrap things up quickly so he can collect his reward.

Rock, Scissors, Paper

Goku challenges Jackie to a quick round of his old game from the opening bracket, calling out paper while throwing a closed fist. The feint lands cleanly across Jackie's face and staggers him badly. Cornered and outmaneuvered by a children's bluff, the disguised master decides there is no choice left but to resort to one particular technique he has been holding in reserve all match.
