Jackie Chun reveals a technique he once used on Grandpa Gohan, unleashing twenty thousand volts of electricity into the ring. Goku is seconds from surrender when his eyes drift upward and the full moon over Papaya Island takes complete control of his mind.
Jackie Chun finally commits to the attack he has been keeping out of sight. He warns, almost to himself, that it should not be fatal for a fighter as resilient as Goku, though he has only ever used it in combat one other time. That previous target, he admits out loud in front of the entire arena, was Son Gohan, the grandfather Goku loved most in the world. The mention rattles Goku, who now knows this stranger crossed paths with his family long before the two of them ever met on the ring floor today.
Jackie slaps his palms together and begins channeling power between them. After a long charge, electricity crackles around his fingers, arcing brighter with each passing second. With a shout he releases a white bolt that catches Goku square and lifts him clear of the ring floor on a jittering current of raw voltage. From the stands, Yamcha identifies the technique for Krillin by name. It is the Thunder Shock Surprise, a strike that routes something near twenty thousand volts of ki-forged electricity directly through its target.
Jackie tells the boy to give up, pointing out that even Grandpa Gohan could only push him this far and no farther. The comparison, rather than any of the pain, finally breaks Goku's will to continue. He starts to stammer the words "I give" through gritted teeth, ready to concede the championship to the disguised master. Before the second syllable can land, his gaze drifts up past the stadium lights and settles on the full moon hanging over Papaya Island. His pupils flood red, his muscles seize up all at once, and the transformation long hinted at since his first night away from home begins ripping through his small body as he swells into a towering Great Ape.
