The Five Champions

Manga ChapterCh. 99

Baba's gauntlet begins on a ring suspended over a lake, where fall or surrender both count as losses. Her first fighter is Dracula Man, a shapeshifting vampire who chews through Kuririn's attempt, only to be outwitted by the unlikely duo of Upa and Puar.

Kuririn Steps Up First

Baba tries to wave the group off, warning that they are just kids, but Kuririn and Yamcha shrug off her concern. Puar and Upa admit they are no fighters, leaving only three contenders to face her five. Yamcha asks about the ring's rules, and Baba explains that surrender or a plunge into the surrounding lake both count as an immediate loss. Kuririn confidently volunteers to go first and boasts that he will clear all five opponents himself. Baba summons Dracula Man, a bat that flutters out and transforms into a wiry vampire dressed like a kickboxer.

Blood in the Water

Kuririn leaps in with a kick, but Dracula Man flickers back into bat form and buzzes around the ring faster than the monk can track. When he rematerializes, it is on Kuririn's back, biting down into his scalp. Kuririn flips backwards to shake him loose and crashes headfirst onto the ring, but two puncture wounds are already leaking. Baba taunts him to surrender before he bleeds to death. Enraged, he tries to stop the bleeding by praying, only for it to dribble out harder. As he grows lightheaded from blood loss, the vampire punts him off the ring and into the lake.

An Unlikely Duo

With Kuririn taped up and refueled by a blood transfusion from the ghost, Baba demands the next fighter. Puar and Upa step forward together, and Goku asks if the two smallest members can fight as a pair. Dracula Man happily accepts, dreaming of a double feast. Upa chews something quietly and then exhales a lungful of garlic stench directly into the vampire's face. Gagging, Dracula Man rockets into bat form and dives at Puar, who transforms into a porcupine in his mouth. When he spits her out and looks up, Upa is standing with his arms outstretched in a cross. The vampire panics, tries to flee, and Puar morphs into a giant hand to swat him down into the lake.
