With one Dragon Ball still missing from the radar, Goku sets off alone on the Flying Nimbus to track down the car carrying it. What he finds is an old enemy, Emperor Pilaf, hiding the orb inside a radar-proof box and scheming to reclaim every ball by exploiting the weakness of Goku tail.
With six Dragon Balls in hand and the seventh refusing to appear on the radar, Goku volunteers to fly out and investigate the car that the group suspects is transporting it. Yamcha is skeptical about the odds of finding a single vehicle in open country, but Fortuneteller Baba assures him that traffic through the region is extremely sparse. Bulma remains baffled that her radar still shows nothing, and Goku wastes no time, hopping onto the Flying Nimbus and speeding away in search of the final orb.
Inside the fleeing car, Emperor Pilaf outlines his plan to his loyal subordinates Shu and Mai. He intends to snatch Goku by the tail to drain his strength, then rob the group of every Dragon Ball they have gathered. When Shu innocently asks what he intends to do once he rules the planet, Pilaf fumbles for a coherent answer, revealing he has put almost no thought into life after world conquest.
Goku spots the car from above and drops onto its roof, then leans upside down through the windshield to politely ask for the Dragon Ball inside. Mai swerves hard and flings him off. Pilaf is stunned that Goku found them at all, since their Dragon Ball is sealed inside a special box designed to fool any radar. When Goku finally recognizes the trio, Pilaf sees an opportunity in the boy traveling alone, confident that knowledge of his weak point will settle the fight. He proposes a wager: beat him in combat to claim the seventh ball, lose and surrender all six. Pilaf, Shu, and Mai then hurl capsules that burst into three Pilaf Machines. Undaunted, Goku charges forward and boots Pilaf mech straight into a cliff, leaving Shu and Mai scrambling to rescue their panicked emperor.
