Goku and Tien Shinhan clash in the semifinals of the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Tien initially holds the advantage with superior speed, but the tide turns when Goku removes his weighted training gear, over a hundred kilograms carried throughout the entire tournament. Freed from that burden, Goku demonstrates blinding speed and steals Tien's belt as proof.
The semifinal bout between Goku and Tien Shinhan begins at a furious pace. Tien is impressed by Goku's improvement since their last encounter, but he remains confident that his own speed will carry the match. He charges at Goku and vanishes from sight, and Goku vanishes in pursuit. The two fighters reappear high above the ring, trading rapid kicks in midair. Tien compliments Goku's sharp eyes, then asks what will happen when vision is not enough. He positions himself above Goku and drives an elbow downward, sending Goku plummeting toward the arena.
Goku recovers with a safe landing and flips backward, throwing an elbow that passes through one of Tien's afterimages. The real Tien appears and kicks him out of the ring, but Goku spins his body like a tornado to propel himself back inside the boundary. He acknowledges Tien's speed, and Tien declares that advantage will guarantee his victory. Goku asks for a moment to change his clothes.
Goku peels off his outer shirt, removes his undershirt, and drops it to the ground with a thunderous thud. Tien picks it up and is stunned by the weight. Goku explains that weighted clothing is part of Kami's training regimen, similar to the heavy turtle shells he wore under Master Roshi. He removes his boots and wrist guards as well, all equally dense. Krillin and Yamcha step into the ring to carry the gear backstage and struggle under the load. Tien calculates that the total exceeds one hundred kilograms, and the crowd reacts with astonishment.
With the extra weight gone, Goku bounces lightly on his feet and signals for the fight to resume. Tien rushes in, but Goku simply vanishes. Tien spots him and attacks with an elbow, but Goku blocks effortlessly. They pause, and Tien claims the speed difference is still negligible. Then Goku reveals he is holding Tien's obi. Tien's pants drop to the floor, and the arena erupts. The message is clear: Goku's true speed is in a different league entirely.
