Five years after the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, a space pod crashes in a remote field and a long-haired warrior in battle armor emerges. He kills a farmer with a flicked bullet, detects a high power level on his scouter, and flies off searching for someone called Kakarot. A brief encounter with Piccolo leaves the Namekian frozen with fear, and a final panel reveals Kakarot is Goku.
Five years have passed since Goku claimed victory at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. The peace is shattered when a spherical pod punches through the atmosphere and slams into a farmer's field in the remote Spinach Wastes, carving a deep crater into the soil. The farmer grabs his rifle and drives out to investigate. A hatch opens on the pod and a tall man steps out, clad in battle armor with long, wild black hair. He seems annoyed that the planet still has inhabitants, as though he expected the population to have been wiped out long ago.
The stranger raises a device clipped to his ear and scans the terrified farmer. The scouter reads a power level of five, and the warrior scoffs at the pathetic strength of Earthlings. The farmer panics and fires his rifle at point-blank range. The armored man catches the bullet between two fingers without flinching, then flicks it back with lethal force, killing the farmer instantly. The scouter beeps again, registering a far more impressive power level elsewhere on the planet. The warrior lifts off and flies toward the signal at tremendous speed, muttering about someone named Kakarot.
The scouter leads the stranger to a barren wasteland where Piccolo trains alone. Piccolo senses the newcomer's overwhelming power and demands to know who he is. The warrior brushes off a Dust Attack without blinking. He begins preparing a counterattack, but his scouter picks up another strong reading in a different direction. Deciding Piccolo is not the one he seeks, the stranger takes to the sky. Piccolo stands rooted to the spot, genuinely paralyzed with fear for the first time in his life. As the warrior flies toward the second reading, he wonders aloud whether Kakarot has forgotten the pride of the Saiyan race. A small image of Goku as a baby appears, confirming that the alien's target and Son Goku are one and the same.
