Five years after the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Goku reunites with old friends at Kame House and introduces his young son, Gohan. The peaceful gathering turns deadly when a mysterious alien warrior lands on the island, calls Goku by the name Kakarrot, and sends Krillin crashing through the house with a single swipe of his tail.
Bulma arrives at Kame House sporting a new short haircut, greeting Master Roshi, Turtle, and Krillin for the first time in years. Roshi immediately earns himself a punch by asking for an inappropriate gift, staying true to form as always. Bulma mentions that Yamcha is out of the picture, calling him an idiot, and Krillin reveals that Lunch left to chase after Tien Shinhan five years ago.
Before long, Goku flies in on the Flying Nimbus carrying a small child. Krillin assumes Goku has taken up babysitting, but Goku proudly announces that the boy is his son. The revelation stuns everyone at the house.
The boy, named Son Gohan after Goku's late grandfather, politely greets the group. He wears a Chinese-style outfit and a hat adorned with the Four-Star Dragon Ball, Grandpa Gohan's treasured keepsake. Gohan tells Bulma he is four years old, and she notes how well-mannered he is compared to his father.
Bulma and the others notice that Gohan has a tail, just like Goku once did. They nervously ask whether anything strange has happened during full moons, but Goku says his family goes to bed early and has no idea what they mean. Roshi quickly drops the subject. When asked about training, Goku admits that Chi-Chi forbids martial arts practice, insisting that Gohan focus on his studies now that the world is at peace.
Goku suddenly tenses, sensing an overwhelming power approaching the island. Moments later, a towering alien warrior touches down on the beach. He addresses Goku as Kakarrot and comments that Goku looks just like his father. The stranger demands to know why the humans on the planet are still alive, insisting that Goku should have wiped them out long ago.
Krillin steps forward, assuming the newcomer is simply a drunk. Goku shouts a warning, but it comes too late. The alien lashes Krillin with his tail, sending him smashing through the wall of the house. Everyone stares in shock as they realize the alien's tail had been coiled around his waist like a belt, hidden in plain sight.
