Gohan's hidden power explodes as the four-year-old headbutts Raditz hard enough to crack his armor. Though the burst fades quickly, it creates just enough of an opening for Goku to lock Raditz in a full nelson and hold him in place. Piccolo fires the Special Beam Cannon a final time, and the spiraling beam pierces straight through both brothers, ending the battle at the cost of Goku's life.
Gohan bursts from the space pod in tears, his small body radiating a staggering battle power of 1,307 on Raditz's scouter. Goku shouts at his son to run, but the enraged child does not hear him. Screaming for his father, Gohan launches himself at Raditz and drives his head into the Saiyan's chest with enough force to crack through his battle armor. Raditz staggers backward, gasping from the impact.
As quickly as it appeared, Gohan's power vanishes. The boy's reading drops to a mere 1, and he stands dazed, no longer understanding what just happened. Raditz recovers enough to smack the child aside and turns to finish him off. Goku pleads with his brother to stop, but Raditz ignores him and walks toward the fallen Gohan.
Summoning every ounce of strength left in his body, Goku leaps up and wraps his arms around Raditz from behind, locking him in a full nelson hold. He screams for Piccolo to fire the Special Beam Cannon immediately. Raditz struggles but cannot break free; Gohan's earlier attack weakened him just enough. He realizes what Goku is doing and yells that the beam will kill them both. Goku tells him he does not care.
Piccolo is more than happy to oblige. Killing Goku along with Raditz suits him perfectly, and he reasons that Goku's friends will likely gather the Dragon Balls to wish him back anyway. Raditz tries one last time to talk his way out, swearing he will leave Earth and never return, but Goku refuses to fall for the same trick twice.
Piccolo unleashes the Special Beam Cannon. The spiraling beam tears through Raditz's torso and continues straight through Goku's chest behind him. Both Saiyans collapse. The battle that began with an alien's arrival at a tiny island ends in a desolate wasteland with Goku sacrificing his life to protect his son and the planet he was originally sent to destroy.
