A Window of Hope

Goku expresses surprise that Vegeta still doubts his ability to defeat Frieza. Krillin sides with Goku, but Vegeta dismisses them both, suggesting they fight Frieza themselves. He adds that Frieza has probably already wished for eternal life. Krillin pushes back, noting that the sky never went dark. On Earth, the sky darkens whenever Shenron appears, and no such event occurred on Namek. When Vegeta seems startled to learn that an actual dragon is involved, Goku pieces together an important truth: neither Vegeta nor Frieza knows how to activate the Dragon Balls. He, Krillin, and Gohan begin celebrating their unexpected advantage.

The Ginyu Force Regroups

At Frieza's spaceship, Captain Ginyu is stunned when Jeice reports that Recoome and Burter have both been defeated by a single Saiyan. Ginyu decides not to inform Frieza, unwilling to bring humiliation upon the Ginyu Force. He instructs Jeice to bury the Dragon Balls near the ship. After bemoaning that their fighting poses no longer look impressive with only two members, Ginyu and Jeice take off toward the battlefield.

Planning the Next Move

The group discusses strategy. Goku proposes finding the Dragon Balls and using them to revive their fallen friends. Vegeta still wants eternal life for himself. The conversation is cut short when Vegeta senses two powerful ki signatures approaching. Goku also detects Frieza's energy heading toward Grand Elder Guru's home. Gohan realizes with alarm that Frieza will kill Guru once he learns the activation method, not understanding that Guru's death would render the Dragon Balls inert.

Captain Ginyu Enters the Fight

Ginyu and Jeice arrive, and Ginyu quickly deduces that Goku has been spiking his power in short bursts to fool scouters. He estimates Goku's true fighting power at around 60,000. Goku sends Krillin and Gohan to retrieve the Dragon Balls while he handles Ginyu alone. As the two warriors square off, Vegeta suddenly flies away. The departure distracts Goku for a moment, and Ginyu seizes the opening to launch his attack.
