With the Kaio-ken Kamehameha proven useless, Goku is left battered and nearly out of energy. Frieza pummels him without mercy, driving him to the brink of defeat. Just as Gohan is about to charge in, Piccolo notices Goku raising both hands to the sky. It is the Spirit Bomb, and Goku is drawing energy from the living things on neighboring planets to build it on a scale never before attempted.
After the failed Kaio-ken Kamehameha, Goku is forced to confront the truth: Frieza was not bluffing about his power reserves. Elsewhere, Bulma wonders what is happening and nervously urges Goku to win. Krillin cannot believe that such a devastating Kamehameha failed to do any real damage, and Gohan notes that his father's ki has dropped dramatically after the strain of the attack. Piccolo silently agrees with King Kai's earlier warning: they should never have challenged Frieza.
Goku drops to the ground, completely drained. Frieza himself is momentarily surprised, privately wondering where a Saiyan found that much power. He descends to face Goku and admits the blast actually hurt. This only makes him angrier. Enraged that a Saiyan dared to wound him, Frieza drives a headbutt into Goku and sends him tumbling. He follows up by kicking Goku into the air, chasing him down, and slamming him back to earth with a second kick.
Goku struggles to his knees. Frieza asks if he has lost his strength, and Goku silently confirms it, reflecting that the Kaio-ken times twenty was simply too much for his body. Frieza fires a slashing wave of ki that tears a crescent-shaped crater into the landscape. Goku barely guards himself from the worst of it, but Frieza can see he has truly reached his limit.
Gohan reaches the end of his patience and prepares to jump in, but Piccolo stops him, noticing that Goku is doing something. Goku has raised both hands above his head. Krillin instantly recognizes the pose and explains the Spirit Bomb technique to Piccolo, who is frustrated that King Kai never taught it to him. Gohan worries that Namek's sparse life force will not be enough, but Goku is already reaching out to worlds beyond Namek, drawing energy from across the cosmos. He knows the resulting bomb could damage the planet, but if Frieza survives, the entire universe is at stake. Above them, the Spirit Bomb begins to take shape, and its sheer size leaves everyone staring in disbelief.
