With Cell on the loose and growing stronger, the Z Fighters split up to tackle multiple threats at once. Krillin and Future Trunks destroy Dr. Gero's underground laboratory, Bulma discovers a potential weakness in the androids' design, and Goku finally wakes from his illness, declaring his intent to surpass the Super Saiyan form.
In the aftermath of Cell's escape, the Z Fighters regroup. Krillin says they need to track Cell down, but Future Trunks warns that Cell will suppress his ki while preying on innocent people. Tien Shinhan insists on preventing Cell from absorbing Android 17 and Android 18. Vegeta dismissively suggests letting Cell fuse with the androids so there will be fewer enemies to destroy, boasting that he will transcend the Super Saiyan state. Piccolo reminds him that he was outmatched by the androids, but Vegeta simply declares that both he and Goku will reach a new level of power before flying off.
Future Trunks confirms that destroying the androids in the past would not alter their timeline, but suggests they can prevent another Cell from being born by demolishing Dr. Gero's laboratory. Piccolo sends Krillin and Trunks to handle it while he and Tien hunt for Cell. At the lab, they find a hidden basement containing Gero's supercomputer and Present Cell in larval form. Trunks discovers blueprints for Androids 17 and 18 and pockets them for his mother. The two then obliterate the entire facility. As they depart, Trunks asks Krillin to deliver the blueprints to Bulma while he trains alongside Vegeta.
Tien detects a faint ki disturbance and follows it with Piccolo to a nearby town, only to find it deserted with empty clothing scattered everywhere. Cell watches from a rooftop, amused by their futile search. At Capsule Corporation, Bulma and Dr. Brief study the blueprints, determining that Androids 17 and 18 are bio-organically enhanced humans. Bulma believes their few cybernetic parts may reveal a weakness. Three quiet days pass before Cell attacks the South District. The Z Fighters fly toward the scene by airplane to avoid detection. At Kame House, Chi-Chi finds Goku already awake and getting dressed. He explains that he overheard everything during his recovery and intends to conserve his strength while training to surpass Super Saiyan.
