The Balance of Power

Manga ChapterCh. 385

Trunks' raw power surpasses Cell's own, yet he cannot land a single blow. Inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Goku discovers the same fatal flaw in Super Saiyan Third Grade: it sacrifices speed for strength. Goku devises a new plan for himself and Gohan to master the base Super Saiyan form instead, while Cell humiliates Trunks by replicating the bulky transformation himself.

Power Without Results

Future Trunks pushes his power higher, intent on showing Cell everything he has. Cell openly admits that Trunks' energy output exceeds his own, but assures him that raw power is not everything. Trunks dismisses this as a bluff and charges. At the Lookout, Piccolo is stunned by how powerful Trunks has become. Bulma demands to know what is happening, and Piccolo tells her Trunks is fighting, filling her with hope.

Goku's Discovery

Inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and practices flying, punching, and kicking. Goku, meditating nearby, is impressed with Gohan's rapid progress. Gohan wonders why his father has been sitting still for so long, then drops out of the form and collapses. Goku stands and transforms into a Super Saiyan, pushes to Second Grade, then Third Grade. Gohan is awed by the enormous power and believes Goku could defeat Cell easily.

However, on the battlefield, the critical weakness of Third Grade is on full display. Despite overwhelming strength, Trunks cannot land a single hit. Cell dodges every attack with ease, and Trunks yells in frustration. Goku recognizes the problem: the massive muscle gain destroys speed, and the form burns energy at an unsustainable rate. All the power in the world means nothing if you cannot connect. Goku concludes that standard Super Saiyan is the superior foundation and proposes making it their natural state, eliminating the restless tension it creates. Gohan agrees.

Cell's Lesson

Back on the islands, Trunks is baffled by his inability to connect. Cell mocks him for not seeing the obvious flaw, pointing out that Trunks promised to show his true power yet relied on brute force alone. To drive the lesson home, Cell bulks up into a Super Saiyan Third Grade form of his own, proving that anyone can take on such a shape. Trunks stares in horror at the sight.
