Last Resort

Manga ChapterCh. 400

In a move that stuns everyone, Goku forfeits his match against Cell. With his energy depleted and no path to victory, Goku drops out of Super Saiyan and declares his surrender. Cell warns that if no new challenger steps forward, the entire planet will be destroyed. Goku calmly announces that there is still one fighter left who can win.

Fading Strength

Cell punches Goku with enough force to send him crashing through a nearby mountain. As Goku explodes out of the rubble, he fires a rapid barrage of energy blasts at Cell. Cell raises a massive barrier that absorbs every shot. Across the globe, the television audience watches in stunned silence. An elderly couple recognizes the fighter as Chi-Chi's husband. At Kame House, Bulma cheers Goku on, but Master Roshi sees through the bravado. He grimly observes that Goku cannot win this fight and that Goku himself seems to know it.

When the barrier fades, Goku is panting heavily. Cell notices the drop in stamina and offers to let Goku eat a Senzu Bean so the fight can continue at full intensity. Future Trunks urges Krillin to hand one over. Vegeta snaps at his son, declaring that no true Saiyan would accept such charity. Kakarot would rather die than win that way.

Goku Surrenders

Cell taunts Goku, asking whether pride prevents him from accepting the bean, and adds that it would actually improve his odds. Goku says nothing at first. Then he smirks, lands gently on the ground, and lets his Super Saiyan aura vanish. His golden hair returns to black. He declares that he is giving up, that this is an official submission.

The announcement ripples through the crowd. The cameraman relays Goku's words to Mr. Satan and Jimmy Firecracker. Cell asks if Goku understands the consequences: if there is no one left to fight, every living being on Earth will perish. Goku responds calmly that there is still one more person who can take him on.

One Fighter Remains

Cell scoffs, dismissing Vegeta and Future Trunks as weaker than Goku and therefore pointless. The announcer turns to Mr. Satan, insisting it is his turn again. Satan immediately clutches his stomach and fakes a cramp. Goku asks Cell whether he can choose the next challenger himself. Cell, intrigued and somewhat incredulous, agrees. Vegeta stares at Goku in bewilderment, unable to imagine who could possibly surpass them all.
