Vegeta embraces Trunks for the first time, then knocks both boys unconscious so they cannot interfere with his plan. He asks Piccolo whether he will see Goku in the afterlife and learns the answer is no. Accepting his fate, Vegeta channels every ounce of his remaining energy into a self-destruction so massive it dwarfs even Buu's earlier explosion.
Vegeta orders Trunks and Goten to find shelter, insisting he will face Buu alone. Trunks argues that fighting together would be smarter, and both boys remind Vegeta how strong they are. Vegeta tells Trunks he has not embraced him since infancy and wants to now. Trunks hesitates, but Vegeta pulls him close, holds his son for a quiet moment, smiles, and whispers for him to be well. Then he chops Trunks on the back of the neck, knocking him out instantly. Goten panics, but Vegeta silences him with a punch to the stomach. Both boys collapse.
Piccolo flies over and sees the children unconscious. Buu rises in the distance, humming cheerfully. Vegeta asks Piccolo to carry the boys far away. As Piccolo lifts them, he realizes what Vegeta intends. Vegeta asks one question: will he see Kakarot in the afterlife? Piccolo says no. Vegeta killed too many innocents. His body will be erased, his soul sent to a separate realm, his memories scrubbed, and he will be reborn as an entirely new being. Vegeta absorbs the truth quietly and tells Piccolo to go.
Piccolo takes flight with the boys. Buu moves to intercept, but Vegeta blocks his path and calls him a balloon. He claims he has discovered how to destroy Buu. Piccolo passes Krillin and urges him to follow. Krillin asks what Vegeta is planning, and Piccolo explains that for the first time, Vegeta has chosen to fight for someone other than himself, willing to throw away his life.
Vegeta's energy surges. He vows to scatter Buu into pieces too small to regenerate. In his final thoughts he bids farewell to Bulma, Trunks, and Kakarot. Then he detonates in a blinding eruption that dwarfs Buu's earlier blast. The shockwave reaches Piccolo and Krillin at a great distance. The proud Saiyan prince is gone.
