Gohan dominates Buu so thoroughly that the monster resorts to self-destructing just to buy time. While Buu hides and schemes, Gohan regroups with Piccolo and the boys, rescues Mr. Satan from the desert, and reunites with Dende, whose survival means the Dragon Balls can be restored.
Gohan confidently tells Buu that winning is impossible. Buu admits he sensed Gohan's power from a great distance and refuses to accept that anyone could surpass him. Screaming that he will kill Gohan, Buu begins charging energy, but Gohan recognizes what is happening. He grabs Piccolo, Trunks, and Goten and flies away at top speed just before Buu detonates himself in a massive explosion.
From a cliff overlooking the blast zone, Gohan explains that Buu did not die. The self-destruction was not aimed at killing anyone; Buu is hiding his ki and plotting something. Piccolo confirms he cannot sense Buu at all. Goten suspects a sneak attack, but Gohan believes Buu's plan goes deeper.
Trunks insists Gohan can handle Buu easily. Goten says Gohan is even stronger than Super Gotenks, and Trunks grudgingly agrees. When Gohan asks about the Dragon Radar, Piccolo still has it. Gohan then reveals the faint ki he sensed earlier belongs to Dende.
The group flies toward Dende and spots Mr. Satan stumbling through the desert with his puppy. Trunks wants to abandon him, but Piccolo insists they bring him along. They reach Dende, who explains that Mr. Popo threw him off the Lookout to ensure his survival, knowing the Dragon Balls would die with their guardian. Piccolo silently praises Popo's quick thinking.
Mr. Satan learns Videl was killed. Goten reassures him the Dragon Balls can bring her back. From the Sacred World of the Kai, Goku watches through the crystal ball and feels relieved. Then everyone on Earth senses Buu approaching, and Gohan is curious to see what the monster devised during the past hour.
