Future Trunks battles Goku Black in a desperate bid to reach the Time Machine, escaping to the past just seconds before a Black Kamehameha engulfs his position. In the present timeline, a recovered Future Trunks spars with Goku and reveals that the enemy who destroyed his world is far beyond anything Super Saiyan 3 can handle.
Enraged by Future Mai's apparent death, Future Trunks powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and fires a Masenko at Goku Black, pushing him outside the building. Future Trunks grabs his sword and launches a flurry of strikes, but Black blocks every one and sends him flying. After catching Black's blade bare-handed and taking a crushing elbow to the neck, Future Trunks remembers the words of Future Mai and Future Bulma. He slams his sword's sheath into Black's face, fires a massive ki blast into the ground for cover, retrieves his sword, and dives toward the Time Machine. Black fires a Black Kamehameha, but the machine activates at the last second, vanishing from the timeline.
At present-day Capsule Corporation, the Time Machine materializes. Trunks finds an unconscious man who looks exactly like him. Goku fetches a Senzu Bean, and Vegeta feeds it to Future Trunks, who wakes up and immediately attacks Goku before recognizing his voice. Future Trunks recounts that a foe wearing Goku's face has killed millions and destroyed Future Bulma. The Time Machine had only enough fuel for a one-way trip. Vegeta scolds him for fleeing, but Bulma defends Future Trunks. She discovers the fuel is the same compound she is developing, though it will take a full day to produce enough.
Goku asks to spar. Both ascend to Super Saiyan 2, and Future Trunks holds a slight edge, stronger than Gohan was at the Cell Games after ten years of solo training. Goku reveals Super Saiyan 3; Future Trunks pushes his power to match it without transforming further. Goku then secretly taps into Super Saiyan God for a single decisive blow. Impressed, Goku praises his growth, but Future Trunks insists even this falls short against Black. Beerus refuses to accompany them and asks why the God of Destruction of that timeline allows Black to run free. Future Trunks reveals that Future Shin died fighting Future Dabura. Whis then explains the critical bond: if a Supreme Kai dies, the linked God of Destruction dies too. The alternate timeline has no divine protector left.
