Future Trunks Saga

In the alternate future timeline, a lone warrior runs through the ruins of a civilization. Future Trunks, the last hope of his world, has been fighting an enemy unlike any he has faced before: a being who looks exactly like Goku, wears black clothing, and calls himself Son Goku while systematically exterminating humanity in the name of justice. Future Bulma has spent months repairing the time machine, and when Goku Black attacks their hideout and kills her, Trunks escapes with only enough fuel for a one-way trip to the past. Future Mai falls covering his retreat. The time machine vanishes just as Black's Dark Kamehameha reaches it.

Return to the Present

Future Trunks arrives at Capsule Corporation unconscious and battered. When a Senzu Bean revives him and he sees Goku's face, he attacks instinctively, believing he has failed to travel through time. Bulma's slap brings him back to his senses. The reunion is bittersweet: Goku and Vegeta are alive and well, but Trunks carries the weight of a dead world on his shoulders. He explains Goku Black's appearance and power, dubbing him "Black" because of his dark clothing, and the heroes resolve to travel to the future and end the threat.

During a sparring session, Goku transforms to Super Saiyan 3 and easily defeats Future Trunks, who realizes the gap between himself and these warriors has only grown wider. Then a portal opens in the sky and Goku Black steps through, drawn to the past by the time distortion of Trunks's machine. Goku fights Black at Super Saiyan 2 and gains the upper hand, but Black's power increases with every exchange. Before the fight can conclude, the Time Ring on Black's hand drags him back to the future as the distortion corrects itself. In his final act before vanishing, Black destroys the time machine, stranding Trunks.

Zamasu and the Zero Mortal Plan

Whis identifies the Time Ring as an artifact exclusive to Supreme Kais, raising disturbing questions about Black's identity. Investigation leads to Universe 10, where Goku meets Zamasu, an apprentice Supreme Kai who harbors a deep hatred for mortals. After Goku defeats him in a sparring match, Zamasu's resentment deepens into murderous conviction. Using the Super Dragon Balls, Zamasu from an unaltered timeline wishes to swap bodies with Goku, becoming Goku Black. Three Trips to the Future

Bulma repairs the time machine using Cell's abandoned version from the Android Saga, and the heroes make multiple trips to the future. The first expedition reveals the full horror: humanity reduced to scattered survivors hiding in underground shelters, with Future Mai leading the resistance. Goku and Vegeta fight Black and Future Zamasu but are forced to retreat when Black reveals Super Saiyan Rose, a divine transformation that overwhelms both Saiyans. Vegeta in particular suffers a brutal defeat, his pride wounded as deeply as his body.

The second trip sees Vegeta, having trained furiously in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, dominate Black in a show of force driven by pure rage at the murder of his future counterpart's wife. When the two villains fuse using Potara earrings into Merged Zamasu, the resulting being combines Goku's fighting genius, Zamasu's divine power, and immortality into a single entity that neither Goku nor Vegeta can defeat.

The Final Trump Card

Goku and Vegeta attempt Potara fusion, but Merged Zamasu's relentless attacks prevent them from connecting the earrings. Future Trunks, channeling the hope and energy of every surviving human, manifests a Spirit Sword of pure ki and cleaves Merged Zamasu in two. But immortality persists. Zamasu's essence begins spreading across the sky, merging with the universe itself, becoming an omnipresent force of annihilation that cannot be fought with fists or ki blasts.

In absolute desperation, Goku remembers the button given to him by Zeno, the Omni-King who rules over all universes. He presses it. Future Zeno appears, surveys the corruption spreading across the timeline, and with a single gesture, erases everything. The entire future timeline, its universe, its people, its history, ceases to exist. Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Mai, and Bulma escape through the time machine moments before the erasure is complete.

A Future Without a Future

The aftermath is haunting. Future Trunks's world is gone, not conquered or destroyed but simply erased from existence. Whis offers a partial solution: he can take Trunks and Mai to a point in the future timeline before Zamasu's interference, creating a branching timeline where they can live alongside alternate versions of themselves. It is not home, but it is survival. Trunks and Mai accept, saying goodbye to friends they will never see again. Goku brings Future Zeno to the present timeline and introduces him to present Zeno, fulfilling a promise and setting into motion events that will lead directly to the Tournament of Power.

Goku Black is one of Dragon Ball's most psychologically unsettling villains because he uses Goku's body and techniques while possessing none of Goku's compassion. Every time he performs a Kamehameha or displays Saiyan battle instincts, it creates a dissonance that makes the heroes physically uncomfortable. His Super Saiyan Rose transformation, a pink-hued divine form, is visually striking in its perversion of Super Saiyan Blue; it is literally the same power filtered through a fundamentally different soul. When he tells Black that he will never forgive him for what he did to the future version of Bulma and Trunks, the moment reveals how far Vegeta has come from the man who once saw family as weakness. Merged Zamasu and Trunks's Moment

Merged Zamasu presents a problem that Dragon Ball's usual escalation cannot solve. His immortality means that no amount of power can defeat him permanently, and his fusion combines the worst qualities of both halves: Goku's combat genius serving Zamasu's genocidal ideology. Future Trunks's Spirit Sword, formed from the collective hope of humanity's survivors, provides the saga's most symbolically rich combat moment. The sword is not powered by Saiyan genetics or divine training but by the will of ordinary people who refuse to die quietly. It is the first time in Dragon Ball Super that human hope is weaponized, and the result is spectacular.

The decision to resolve the conflict through Zeno's erasure is the saga's most controversial and powerful narrative choice. There is no victorious battle, no dramatic finishing move. The heroes simply cannot win against an enemy who has become the universe itself. Goku pressing the button is an act of surrender disguised as strategy, and the silence that follows the erasure carries more weight than any explosion. Dragon Ball has destroyed planets before, but it has never erased an entire timeline from existence. The finality is staggering.

The Future Trunks Saga is widely regarded as Dragon Ball Super's finest arc, and for good reason. It combines the franchise's love of escalating combat with a narrative that asks genuinely uncomfortable questions about divine justice, mortality, and the cost of wielding absolute power. Zamasu's philosophy, that mortals are inherently flawed and the universe would be better without them, is not presented as cartoonish villainy but as a logical extension of a god who has observed mortal violence and cruelty. That his solution is genocide does not make his observations wrong, only his conclusion, and that moral ambiguity gives the saga a depth rare in Dragon Ball storytelling.

Future Trunks as Tragic Hero

No character in Dragon Ball has suffered more than Future Trunks. His timeline has been devastated by Androids, terrorized by Cell, and now conquered by a god wearing his father's rival's face. Each return to the past forces him to see the peaceful lives his friends live in a timeline he can never share.
