Botamo's Race

Race

Bear-like aliens from Universe 6 whose bodies possess a remarkable ability to deflect damage. Botamo, the most prominent member, competed in both the Tournament of Destroyers and the Tournament of Power as a fighter for Team Universe 6.

Rubber Bears of Universe 6

Botamo's race consists of large, hairless, bear-like aliens who come in various colors. Botamo himself is yellow, while other observed members include grey and brown individuals. They inhabit Universe 6, the twin universe of the main Dragon Ball setting, though a similar-looking being named Yunba appeared in Universe 7 as a member of the Galactic Bandit Brigade during the Moro arc. Physically, they are rotund and imposing, with small eyes and rounded features that give them an almost cartoonish appearance that belies their combat effectiveness.

The most distinctive trait of the species, at least as demonstrated by Botamo, is an unusual form of damage negation. Attacks that connect with Botamo's body appear to have no effect; punches and energy blasts simply bounce off or pass through without causing harm. This is not traditional durability or toughness but rather a unique physiological ability that transfers damage to another dimension, leaving the user's body completely unaffected.

Goku's Creative Solution

Botamo's most prominent appearance came during the Tournament of Destroyers, a five-on-five competition between Universe 6 and Universe 7 organized by the Gods of Destruction Champa and Beerus. Botamo was Universe 6's opening fighter, and Goku was selected as his opponent. The early stages of the fight appeared hopeless for Goku, as every punch, kick, and Kamehameha he threw at Botamo simply had no effect. The bear-like alien stood there absorbing everything without flinching.

Goku, being Goku, found a creative workaround. Rather than continuing to hit Botamo, he grabbed him, lifted him off the ground, and dragged him to the edge of the ring. Since Botamo's damage negation did not prevent him from being physically moved, Goku simply tossed him out of bounds for a ring-out victory. It was a clever, almost playful solution that demonstrated the importance of adaptability over raw power. Botamo returned for the Tournament of Power, where he fought alongside Magetta as a tag-team partner, but was eventually eliminated by Vegeta, who used a similar strategy of exploiting the bear's inability to stop himself from being displaced.

The Universe 6 Connection

Additional members of Botamo's race were seen as spectators during the Tournament of Destroyers in the manga, watching from the stands alongside other Universe 6 civilians. This confirms the species has a general population beyond just its one fighter. Their presence in Universe 6's audience suggests they are a well-known species within that universe, possibly with a warrior culture or at least a strong enough reputation to produce tournament-level competitors. The existence of Yunba in Universe 7 raises the possibility that this species, like many others in Dragon Ball, has counterparts across the twin universes.
