A race of short, stout, four-eyed aliens from Planet Bas. Best known as the species of Guldo, the weakest but most psychically gifted member of the Ginyu Force, the Bouleans possess time-stopping abilities that set them apart from any other species in the Frieza Force.
Bouleans are short, stout, amphibian-looking humanoids distinguished by their most prominent feature: an extra pair of eyes on the sides of their heads, giving them four-eyed vision. Their skin colors range from green to blue to red, and some individuals have been observed with five eyes rather than the standard four. They stand only three to four feet tall, making them among the smallest sapient species in the Frieza Force. Their blood is purple, a detail gruesomely confirmed when Guldo was decapitated on Namek. Female Bouleans, as seen with the warrior Parm in Dragon Ball Fusions, are taller and thinner than their male counterparts.
What makes the Bouleans genuinely remarkable is their psychic potential. Members of the species appear to possess natural aptitude for telekinetic and time-manipulation abilities. Guldo's power to freeze time by holding his breath is the most dramatic expression of this, but other members have also demonstrated psychic capabilities, suggesting the talent runs through the species rather than being unique to one individual.
Guldo is far and away the most famous Boulean, though his fame comes with the perpetual asterisk of being the Ginyu Force's weakest fighter. In terms of raw power, Guldo was dramatically outclassed by his teammates Recoome, Burter, Jeice, and Captain Ginyu. What earned him a spot on the most elite squad in the Frieza Force was his psychic ability to stop time. By holding his breath, Guldo could freeze everything around him for as long as his lungs held out. He could also use telekinesis to paralyze opponents in place.
On Namek, Guldo was pitted against Krillin and Gohan. Despite his time-freeze ability, Guldo struggled against the pair, relying on telekinetic paralysis to trap them after his time-stop proved insufficient. Before he could finish them off, Vegeta intervened and decapitated Guldo with a single blast, ending the Boulean's fight in what remains one of the most abrupt villain exits in Dragon Ball Z. Guldo's head survived long enough on the ground to express disbelief before Vegeta destroyed it entirely.
Guldo is described as a mutant member of his race, suggesting his time-stopping power was exceptional even by Boulean standards. Other members of the species served in various capacities within the Frieza Force, including soldiers who appeared in Dragon Ball Online and a tall Boulean among Frieza's 1,000 soldiers in the Resurrection 'F' manga. Scouter models specifically designed to fit Boulean heads existed by Age 1000, indicating the species maintained a presence in the galactic military for centuries. The species' combination of psychic potential and small physical stature makes them one of Dragon Ball's most distinctive alien races, proof that power in this universe is not always measured by size or muscle.
