Kanassan

Race

A race of fish-like humanoids from Planet Kanassa who possessed psychic abilities including telepathy and precognition. Frieza ordered their extermination by Team Bardock out of paranoia that their power to see the future could threaten his rule. The last surviving Kanassan, Toolo, cursed Bardock with visions of Planet Vegeta's destruction before dying.

Eyes That See Tomorrow

The Kanassans are a sapient species of fish-like humanoids native to Planet Kanassa. Standing at heights comparable to the average Saiyan, they possess scaled skin and aquatic facial features that give them a distinctive amphibian appearance. Their physical form, however, belies their most remarkable attribute: psychic ability. Kanassans could communicate telepathically, read the minds of others, and most importantly, see glimpses of the future through a power known as Divination.

This precognitive gift made the Kanassans deeply unsettling to those who valued control. They could anticipate attacks, plan around strategies not yet formed, and perceive events that had not yet occurred. Their telepathic communication was so natural that they could hold full conversations without moving their lips, a detail shown when the Kanassan warrior Demetrious speaks to his commander during battle.

Brave Beyond Their Fate

Despite knowing through their visions that annihilation was coming, the Kanassan warriors displayed extraordinary courage. They fought with honor and determination against vastly superior forces, aware that their efforts would ultimately prove futile. Their commander's final words to Demetrious, acknowledging that his duty was fulfilled and they would meet at the door of the next world, captured the dignified acceptance with which they faced extinction.

The Kanassan War and Bardock's Curse

Frieza ordered the conquest of Planet Kanassa for reasons rooted in both greed and paranoia. The planet possessed unique energy that Frieza wanted to exploit, and the Kanassans' ability to see the future represented an intolerable threat to a tyrant whose power depended on controlling information. Team Bardock, a squad of Saiyan warriors serving the Frieza Force, was dispatched to execute the genocide.

The Saiyans attacked under the light of a full moon, transforming into Great Apes to overwhelm the Kanassan defenders. Despite the Kanassans' psychic abilities and their capacity to harness ki energy, they could not withstand the raw destructive power of multiple Great Apes. The battle was brutal and decisive.

After the conquest appeared complete, a single survivor named Toolo emerged from the carnage. He ambushed Bardock and, in a desperate final act, transferred the Kanassan power of precognition to the Saiyan warrior through a technique called Future Punch. Toolo's intention was cruel and poetic: he wanted Bardock to see the destruction of his own planet and race at Frieza's hands, forcing the Saiyan to experience the same helpless foreknowledge the Kanassans had lived with. Bardock killed Toolo moments later, but the visions had already taken hold.

Prophecy Fulfilled Beyond Death

Toolo's curse worked exactly as intended. Bardock was plagued by visions of Planet Vegeta's destruction, driving him to confront Frieza in a doomed last stand. The irony was devastating: the warrior who helped exterminate a race of seers was destroyed by the very fate they foresaw. The Kanassans' gift of prophecy became the instrument of their revenge, even if Bardock's rebellion ultimately failed to prevent the genocide of his own people.

A Kanassan of different coloring from the TV special variants appears training on Grand Kai's Planet during Dragon Ball Z, suggesting that at least some members of the race earned passage to the afterlife's upper realms. Their presence among the fighters training under Grand Kai implies that the Kanassans' combat abilities, combined with their honorable natures, qualified them for continued existence in Other World's elite circles.

Notable Kanassans

Toolo remains the most significant Kanassan in Dragon Ball lore, his dying act reverberating across the entire Bardock special and setting in motion the events that led to Bardock's legendary final stand against Frieza. The unnamed Kanassan Commander demonstrated the race's values in his final exchange with Demetrious, and Demetrious himself showed that even in their last moments, the Kanassans drew blood from their attackers.
