The Crystal Ball's Power

Divination in Dragon Ball encompasses a range of magical viewing abilities that allow the user to observe events across great distances or through time. Fortuneteller Baba is the most famous diviner, using her crystal ball to locate people, reveal hidden truths, and observe battles happening anywhere in the world. Her abilities extend beyond simple remote viewing; she can also communicate with the dead and temporarily bring deceased warriors back to the living world for a single day.

The technique operates through mystical means rather than ki, making it one of the few abilities in Dragon Ball that exists entirely outside the martial arts power system. No amount of training or power-ups can replicate what Baba does with her crystal ball.

Fortuneteller Baba's Services

Fortuneteller Baba first appears during the original Dragon Ball series when Goku's group needs to locate the last Dragon Ball. Rather than simply telling them where it is (she charges exorbitant fees for her services), Baba requires them to defeat her five fighters in combat. This arc introduces both her divination abilities and the combat tournament format that provides the story's framework.

Her most emotionally significant use of divination comes when she brings Grandpa Gohan back from the dead for a day, giving young Goku a chance to reunite with the man who raised him. The scene is one of Dragon Ball's most touching moments, made possible entirely by Baba's unique connection to the spirit world.

Ongoing Utility

Baba continues to serve as the Z Fighters' go-to source for information throughout the series. When they need to locate someone, understand a threat, or communicate across dimensional boundaries, Baba and her crystal ball are often the answer. Her divination abilities make her one of the most practically useful characters in the series despite having no combat power whatsoever.

Magic Versus Ki

Divination highlights an interesting tension in Dragon Ball's world. Most abilities are rooted in ki, the universal life energy that fuels everything from flight to planet-busting energy blasts. Divination operates on completely different principles, using magic that predates and exists independently of the ki system. This suggests that Dragon Ball's universe has multiple distinct power systems, with ki being the most common but far from the only one.

The Kais and Gods of Destruction also possess divination-like abilities, using godly ki to observe events across universes. Whether these divine viewing powers are related to mortal magic like Baba's or represent an entirely separate phenomenon remains one of the series' unanswered cosmological questions.
