The Sugarians are an alien race who lost their original homeworld and were scammed into purchasing Planet Cereal from the Heeters, a criminal syndicate that had "fixed up" the planet after its devastation. They play a background role in the Granolah the Survivor Saga of Dragon Ball Super.
The Sugarians, known in Japanese as Shuga-jin, are an extraterrestrial species defined by displacement. At some point before the events of the Granolah the Survivor Saga, the Sugarians lost their original homeworld under circumstances that are never fully detailed. Rendered homeless in the cosmos, they became exactly the kind of desperate buyers that unscrupulous operators prey upon.
Their physical appearance marks them as clearly alien, though they are sapient humanoids capable of building communities and conducting commerce. The name "Sugarian" derives from "sugar," consistent with the food-themed naming convention that runs throughout Dragon Ball's alien species. Their original homeworld's name is unknown; by the time they appear in the story, Cereal is the only home they have.
The Sugarians' arrival on Planet Cereal is one of the darker pieces of background storytelling in Dragon Ball Super. The Heeters, a criminal organization that manipulates galactic conflicts for profit, orchestrated the devastation of Cereal by directing the Frieza Force to attack it. They then "fixed up" the planet, presented it to the homeless Sugarians as available real estate, and sold it to them at exploitative prices.
The Sugarians had no idea they were buying a world whose original inhabitants had been slaughtered by the same people selling them the property. Granolah, the last surviving Cerealian, lived among the Sugarians on what was once his people's world, adding a layer of quiet tragedy to every interaction. The Sugarians are not villains; they are victims of the same system that destroyed the Cerealians, just exploited in a different way.
The Sugarians serve an important thematic role in the Granolah the Survivor Saga. They represent the civilians caught in the crossfire of galactic power struggles, people who did nothing wrong but ended up paying the price for others' cruelty and greed. Their purchase of Cereal mirrors real-world patterns of displacement and exploitation, where vulnerable populations are sold resources that were stolen from other vulnerable populations.
No individual Sugarian is given a prominent named role in the story; they exist as a community, a backdrop against which Granolah's personal tragedy and quest for revenge unfold. Their presence on Cereal ensures that Granolah cannot simply destroy everything in pursuit of vengeance, because innocent lives now depend on the planet's survival, adding moral complexity to the saga's central conflict.
