A brainwashing technique invented by the sorcerer Zahha in the Dragon Ball Legends storyline that infuses targets with corrupted energy across three escalating stages of intensity.
Dark Ki is a specialized form of corrupting energy developed by Zahha, a mysterious sorcerer who serves as a central antagonist in the Dragon Ball Legends mobile game. Unlike the Dark Magic practiced by Demon Realm Race members in the Xenoverse series, Dark Ki operates through a distinct three-stage progression that gradually deepens its hold on the target.
At the first stage, the affected warrior becomes enveloped in a dark purple mist and exhibits an afterimage-like visual distortion around their body. The second stage intensifies this effect by adding red electrical sparks reminiscent of the crackling lightning that characterizes Super Saiyan 2. The third and most dangerous stage produces a dark red aura similar to the Evil Aura, powerful enough to warp the surrounding environment. At this level, the target's goals and personal ideals are completely overwritten, turning them into an instrument of Zahha's will.
The results of the spell vary significantly depending on the target and the timing of its application. Giblet, one of the key characters affected by Dark Ki, noted that even the perfected version of the technique falls short of enabling him to reach Super Saiyan God. However, he demonstrated that the third stage can be used alongside Super Saiyan God despite the divine nature of that form, suggesting that Dark Ki and godly energy are not inherently incompatible.
One of the most distinctive side effects of Dark Ki involves Red Ribbon Androids. Models such as Android 13, Android 19, and Dr. Gero (Android 20) normally lack detectable ki signatures, which gives them a tactical stealth advantage against opponents who rely on ki sensing to track their enemies. When empowered by Dark Ki, however, these androids gain a ki signature as a byproduct, allowing opponents to detect them. This trade-off means that while they gain raw power, they sacrifice one of their most useful combat characteristics.
Despite its potency, Dark Ki has a relatively straightforward countermeasure. The spell can often be broken simply by confronting the victim and forcing them to question their altered behavior. When asked directly what they are doing or why, corrupted targets typically cannot provide a coherent answer, and this moment of cognitive dissonance can shatter the enchantment. Physical force, particularly a strong enough blow to the head, can also snap the victim out of their controlled state.
A wide array of fighters across the Legends timeline have fallen under Dark Ki's influence, including Raditz, Turles, Vegeta, Broly, Paragus, the Bojack Squad, various Frieza Force soldiers, Lord Slug, and multiple forms of Buu. The sheer number of affected individuals speaks to the versatility of the technique, though it also highlights its limitation: none of these corrupted warriors proved unstoppable, suggesting that Dark Ki enhances power without fundamentally altering a fighter's ceiling.
