Gameplay & Battle System

Dragon Ball Legends is a mobile fighting game for Android and iOS that centers on assembling teams of six characters to compete in real-time card-based battles. Players obtain fighters by spending Chrono Crystals, the game's premium currency, through a summoning system that awards Z-Power for specific characters. Accumulating 100 units of Z-Power for a character unlocks that fighter, while additional Z-Power gained beyond that threshold triggers Limit Break upgrades that strengthen existing roster members. Characters can also be obtained through events, story chapter completion, and the PVP Exchange Shop.

Battle is managed through a hand of cards representing each fighter's attacks and abilities. Players swipe to dodge, tap to attack, and play cards strategically to maximize damage and build up the special attack gauge. Teams can consist of up to six characters, and players switch between fighters dynamically during a match to take advantage of type matchups and synergies. A Co-op mode allows two players to face a single powerful opponent together, each controlling one unit, while PVP mode enables competitive matches against other players globally.

The game provides substantial character customization for Shallot, the original protagonist, including outfit selection, Super Attack choices, and transformation upgrades. A Training feature allows characters to gain experience passively over time while remaining usable in battle, removing the downtime penalty common in other mobile RPGs. Regular limited events cycle through the game offering unique battles tied to Dragon Ball story arcs, providing both cosmetic rewards and character-specific upgrade materials.

Story & Characters

Dragon Ball Legends features an original story built around Shallot, an amnesiac ancient Saiyan designed by original Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama specifically for this game. Shallot finds himself a participant in the Tournament of Time, a multiversal competition that draws characters from across the Dragon Ball timeline into conflict. The narrative casts him alongside Zahha, who serves as the story's primary antagonist, and Giblet, Shallot's twin brother who shifts between antagonist and protagonist roles across the campaign. These original characters are designed to feel native to the Dragon Ball world rather than inserted franchise outsiders.

The playable roster spans the entirety of the Dragon Ball franchise timeline, with versions of characters representing their appearances from Dragon Ball through Dragon Ball Super. The game has expanded continuously since its launch, adding new story chapters and character variants tied to Dragon Ball Super arcs, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and original Legends-specific content. The Tournament of Time framing allows characters from different eras to encounter one another, creating crossover scenarios that serve as the foundation for the game's ongoing story content.

Reception & Live-Service Legacy

Dragon Ball Legends launched globally and has operated as a live-service title since its release, receiving regular content updates including new story chapters, limited-time events, and banner summons featuring new character variants. The game has maintained a consistent presence in the Dragon Ball mobile market alongside titles such as Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle, appealing to players who prefer real-time action combat over puzzle-based gameplay.

The game is notable for its original narrative contribution to the Dragon Ball canon, as Akira Toriyama's involvement in designing Shallot gives the character a degree of legitimacy within the broader franchise. The Tournament of Time concept has proven flexible enough to sustain years of ongoing story content, allowing the game to remain narratively relevant as new Dragon Ball media is released and new characters are added to its roster.
