Piccolo's strategic masterpiece: a barrage of energy spheres deliberately fired to miss, surrounding the target on all sides before converging simultaneously from every direction. A technique built on patience and ki control rather than brute force.
The Hellzone Grenade, known in Japanese as Makuhoidan or "Demon Air Besieging Bullet," showcases Piccolo's tactical brilliance. Instead of firing directly at his opponent, Piccolo launches dozens of energy spheres in seemingly random directions around the target. The blasts appear to miss wildly, which is exactly the point. Using precise ki control, Piccolo suspends every sphere in the air, creating a cage of energy that completely surrounds the enemy.
Then, on Piccolo's command, every sphere changes color from yellow to purple, begins spinning rapidly, and closes in from all directions at once. The target has nowhere to dodge because the attack comes from everywhere simultaneously. The sky fills with blinding light as the barrage converges.
Piccolo debuts the Hellzone Grenade during his legendary one-on-one battle with Android 17. After 17 dodges his Masenko and other direct attacks, Piccolo descends to the ground and begins firing seemingly aimless blasts skyward. Android 17 initially has no idea what Piccolo is doing, which is the technique's greatest strength: by the time the opponent realizes what's happening, they're already surrounded.
17 looks around in shock as the energy spheres form a perfect cage around him. Piccolo detonates the Hellzone Grenade, and the resulting explosion is massive. For a moment, Piccolo believes he's won. But when the smoke clears, Android 17 stands unharmed behind his Android Barrier, having shielded himself at the last instant. Piccolo's dismay is palpable; he put everything into that gambit.
The technique resurfaces during the Tournament of Power, where Piccolo uses it to corner and eliminate Rubalt of Universe 10. He later fires it at Pilina of Universe 6, though the enormous Namekian proves resistant to the attack. These appearances confirm the Hellzone Grenade remains in Piccolo's active rotation decades after its debut.
What makes the Hellzone Grenade special isn't its raw power but its philosophy. In a series dominated by fighters who overwhelm opponents with superior strength, Piccolo's approach is to outthink them. The technique requires exceptional ki control (suspending dozens of spheres in precise positions), spatial awareness (creating a complete encirclement), and patience (waiting for the trap to fully set before springing it). It's the perfect technique for Dragon Ball's resident tactician.
In video games, the Hellzone Grenade is consistently one of Piccolo's most satisfying moves. The Budokai series and Xenoverse games faithfully reproduce the surrounding-and-converging animation. Dragon Ball Fusions features the Super Hellzone Grenade and Full Power Hellzone Grenade as upgraded variants available to Piccolo and King Piccolo.
