The first of two "graded" power-up stages beyond standard Super Saiyan, achieved by forcing more energy into the transformation to increase muscle mass and power output. Future Trunks and Vegeta both utilized this form during the Cell Saga, treating it as a straightforward power increase over baseline Super Saiyan. Unlike the more extreme Third Grade, Second Grade maintains most of the user's speed and agility, making it a practical combat form.
After Cell achieved his Semi-Perfect form and proved too powerful for standard Super Saiyans to challenge, the Z Fighters needed to find ways to extract more power from their transformations. Vegeta was the first to demonstrate the Second Grade, having trained extensively in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to push his Super Saiyan form beyond its baseline output.
The technique works by deliberately channeling additional ki into the muscles during the Super Saiyan transformation, expanding them beyond the standard level. The result is a fighter who hits noticeably harder than a baseline Super Saiyan while retaining enough speed to remain effective in combat. Vegeta used this form to dominate Semi-Perfect Cell, demonstrating its clear superiority over the standard form.
Second Grade represents the most usable of the graded stages. It provides a meaningful power increase over standard Super Saiyan without the crippling speed penalty that defines Third Grade. The muscle growth is visible but not excessive, and the fighter retains full combat mobility. For a brief period during the Cell Saga, it was the strongest form available to the Z Fighters and appeared to represent the next natural step in Super Saiyan evolution.
Vegeta's use of Second Grade against Semi-Perfect Cell was one of the form's defining moments. After emerging from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Vegeta was so confident in his new power that he allowed Cell to absorb Android 18 and achieve his Perfect Form, a decision born of pride that would have devastating consequences. In Second Grade, Vegeta thoroughly outclassed Semi-Perfect Cell, demonstrating that the graded approach to Super Saiyan genuinely worked at this level.
Future Trunks also utilized Second Grade during the same arc, though he would ultimately push further into Third Grade in his desperation to stop Perfect Cell. Both he and Vegeta arrived at the Second Grade independently through their separate training sessions in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, suggesting that it is a natural discovery for any Saiyan who experiments with channeling more energy into the Super Saiyan form.
Second Grade became obsolete almost immediately after its introduction. Goku and Gohan's Full Power Super Saiyan approach proved more effective in the long run, and Gohan's achievement of Super Saiyan 2 during the Cell Games rendered all graded stages irrelevant. The form was never used again in the mainline series, serving as a brief evolutionary dead end on the path to true advancement.
