A Saiyan's Ultra Instinct

True Ultra Instinct represents one of the most significant philosophical breakthroughs in Goku's fighting career. While Perfected Ultra Instinct is an extraordinarily powerful form, its core requirement, maintaining absolute emotional calm and detachment during combat, stems directly from the nature of the Angels who originally developed the technique. Angels like Whis exist in a state of perpetual serenity, unbothered by concerns that would normally agitate mortal fighters such as threats to loved ones or planetary destruction. Goku, as a Saiyan driven by passion for battle and deep emotional connections to his friends and family, found himself fundamentally incompatible with this requirement.

The realization came during Goku's battle with Gas in the Granolah the Survivor Saga. After being unable to make headway against the Heeter warrior even with Perfected Ultra Instinct, Goku's anger over Granolah's brutal treatment kept disrupting his emotional equilibrium. Vegeta noticed that Goku's Ultra Instinct was faltering and bluntly told him to figure it out, recognizing that the problem was one of approach rather than raw power.

Whis had previously hinted at the solution when he advised Goku to discover his own unique version of Ultra Instinct by listening to the voice within himself. Taking this guidance to heart, Goku briefly meditated during the battle and chose to embrace his Saiyan nature rather than suppress it. By entering Ultra Instinct Sign and channeling his emotions as fuel rather than treating them as obstacles, he created True Ultra Instinct, a form that harnesses the autonomous defense and offense of Ultra Instinct through an entirely different emotional framework.

Combat Performance and Limitations

True Ultra Instinct immediately proved its worth against Gas. Where Perfected Ultra Instinct had been faltering due to Goku's emotional turbulence, True Ultra Instinct allowed him to match and slightly surpass the wish-enhanced Heeter warrior. The form's combat style differed completely from both standard Ultra Instinct Sign and Perfected Ultra Instinct, presenting an approach that was uniquely Goku's own. His movements combined the autonomous reactions of Ultra Instinct with the aggressive, instinct-driven fighting style natural to Saiyans.

The form's practical advantages became clear when Goku explained its nature to Gas. He noted that Perfected Ultra Instinct requires his heart to be calm and tranquil, but in True Ultra Instinct, he can put his emotions to work for him. This emotional engagement actually enhanced his combat clarity rather than diminishing it, allowing him to fight more effectively than in a state of forced detachment.

However, True Ultra Instinct is not without significant limitations. Goku himself acknowledged that he did not have long in this form, indicating that it still drains a large amount of energy despite being more compatible with his nature. Additionally, when Gas survived Granolah's full-power blast and continued fighting, both Goku in True Ultra Instinct and Vegeta were instantly knocked out by Black Frieza, whose overwhelming power bypassed Ultra Instinct's instantaneous defenses entirely.

Following the events of the Super Hero Saga, Goku's continued training brought his Perfected Ultra Instinct to a level where it was once again considered superior to True Ultra Instinct. This suggests that True Ultra Instinct was a necessary stepping stone in Goku's understanding of how to wield Ultra Instinct authentically, and that the lessons he learned from it ultimately improved his mastery of the Perfected form as well.
