A Handy Trick

EpisodioEp. 127

Obsolete Data

The Z Fighters converge on the site of the explosion and find Yamcha crumpled on the ground, Android 20's hand still gripping his face. The android releases his victim and steps back as Goku rushes in. Yamcha's energy is nearly gone, a gaping wound punched clean through his chest. Krillin races the dying warrior back to Bulma, who administers a Senzu Bean just in time. The magical bean repairs even the catastrophic puncture wound, restoring Yamcha fully, though the psychological damage is another matter.

Piccolo studies the two machines and remarks that they hardly look as formidable as Trunks described. Android 20 is intrigued by how much the Z Fighters seem to know and demands answers. Piccolo responds by issuing a challenge, goading the Androids into fighting on his terms. Goku intervenes, asking them to relocate to an uninhabited area to avoid further civilian casualties. Android 20 mocks this compassion by sweeping his eye beams across a wide swath of the island, leveling buildings and infrastructure in a single cruel stroke. Goku drives a fist into the android's face, his rage barely contained.

The group flies to a barren stretch of the Southern Continent. Android 20 reveals that Dr. Gero deployed a remote tracking device to monitor Goku's battles from his earliest World Tournament fights through his clash with Vegeta on Earth. Every technique, every weakness has been cataloged. Goku's response is calm and devastating: their data stops at Namek. Nothing Gero collected accounts for the transformation Goku achieved on a dying alien world. Piccolo spells it out plainly, and Goku demonstrates by ascending to Super Saiyan. Meanwhile, a healed Yamcha desperately tries to reach Goku to warn him about the Androids' energy-draining ability. Android 20 notes Goku's skyrocketing power readings but insists it will not be enough.

Knowledge Is Not Power

The thematic crux of this episode is the gap between information and understanding. Android 20 has years of surveillance data on Goku, enough to predict his Kamehameha, his Kaio-ken, even his fighting stance. But none of that data captures what happened on Namek, because Gero stopped watching. The Androids are fighting a version of Goku that no longer exists. This irony cuts both ways: the Z Fighters also lack critical information about the Androids' energy absorption, a detail Yamcha learned the hard way and is now racing to deliver.

Goku's fury when Android 20 destroys the city is one of the rawest emotional beats in the arc so far. He does not lose control often, but this is a deliberate violation of everything he fights to protect. The punch he lands is not strategic. It is personal.

Details Across Versions

Localization differences give this episode an interesting texture. In the Japanese version, Piccolo catches Android 20 speaking as though he were Dr. Gero himself and calls him out on it, which the android denies. The English dub changes this to Piccolo assuming 20 is simply one of Gero's creations, and the android agrees, adding that it is a pity Gero could not live to see this day. That alteration subtly delays the reveal of 20's true identity for English-speaking audiences.

A small visual gag: when Goku knocks Android 20's hat off, it bends like fabric. Later, when Gohan knocks the same hat off in a future episode, it clangs like steel. Dragon Ball Kai fixed this inconsistency by making the hat metallic in both scenes. The narrator's closing line about "heart-stopping action" is often cited as a possible double meaning, foreshadowing the heart virus that will soon bring Goku to his knees.
