Appearance

Among the crew's officers, Daruma stands out as by far the tiniest, ranking among the most diminutive fish-men shown anywhere in the story. His shark traits include round eyes, a flattened nose, and rows of pointed teeth, while his arms swell out much wider than the hands themselves, and a red tone covers his skin. The crew's Jolly Roger is inked onto his right arm.

Topping his head is an unusual piece of gear that resembles an aviator's cap, fitted with two large spikes that jut upward from either side and crowned by a feathered ridge in the style of old Roman or Greek headpieces. A dark, collarless jacket trimmed with fur hangs open over his torso, and he pairs it with Bermuda shorts. In his teenage years he favored a tall dark top hat marked with a creature that blended a mollusk and a pirate's skull, worn above a spotted A-shirt and dark shorts.

Imprisonment changed him drastically. The lingering harm from the Energy Steroids rapidly aged his body, leaving wrinkles across his face and reducing his limbs to skinny husks. In that state he wears a prison uniform yet still keeps his aviator helmet on.

Personality

Violent appetites drive him, and he openly proposes that fleeing humans be torn apart and devoured. He shares the convictions of Hody Jones and the rest of the officers, embracing the hatred Arlong preached while rejecting everything Otohime stood for. Forcing the residents of Fish-Man Island into compliance through intimidation comes naturally to him.

His jaws demand near-constant use; left idle, they begin to ache and leave him agitated. This compulsion makes him scorn sweets and snacks, and instead he craves tough fish bones that he can grind between his teeth.

History

Daruma grew up alongside the other future officers in the Fish-Man District, where watching humans mistreat fish-men taught them a single lesson: to despise humankind. As adolescents they followed accounts of Fisher Tiger's raid on Mary Geoise and rooted for the Sun Pirates, certain their aim was to wipe out humans. Once Hody enlisted in the Neptune Army, the group turned into terrorists who hunted down any fish-man sympathetic to humans, and they rejoiced when Otohime was assassinated.

During the assault on Fish-Man Island, Daruma spread fear through Candy Factory Town, pressuring citizens to trample a fumi-e bearing Queen Otohime's image before gnawing through the factory walls. He later burrowed to Gyoncorde Plaza, where the officers downed Energy Steroids to overpower and capture the three princes. When the Straw Hats joined the fight, Daruma tunneled beneath the ground and opened pitfalls that swallowed Franky's vehicles, only to be confronted by Tony Tony Chopper.

His final clash came against Usopp. Daruma set himself ablaze and lunged, taunting the sniper for missing, but Usopp had promised to land him in three hits. The first knocked him aside, the second flung him upward, and the last, the Impact Wolf, dropped him with a shockwave despite his boast that he could simply bite through it. Afterward the officers were jailed in the palace, and they later woke to find their bodies wasted and elderly from the steroids. As a fish-man, Daruma carried ten times a human's strength, his jaws could shatter stone, and he could ignite his own body, all powers stripped away once the drug ruined him.
