The Shocking Future: Demande's Dark Ambition

Reaching the 30th century, the guardians discover Crystal Tokyo reduced to a deserted shell. King Endymion greets them and lays out the Black Moon Clan's grim history, then reveals that Chibiusa is the child Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask will one day have. Struck by how closely Sailor Moon mirrors Neo-Queen Serenity, Prince Demande seizes her.

Chibiusa bolts and slips away from the pursuing guardians, who then meet King Endymion, the voice from Usagi and Mamoru's ominous dreams. He guides them to the Crystal Palace and turns out to be Tuxedo Mask's future self. As they travel, the Black Moon Clan watches from afar; Saphir blames Esmeraude for the intruders, though Demande claims the task of dealing with them for himself.

Inside the palace, Endymion explains that Earth froze over, that Neo-Queen Serenity revived humanity with the Silver Crystal, and that the Black Moon Clan later slaughtered the population and cast the queen into a deathlike slumber. Demande breaks in and carries Usagi off. She wakes on Nemesis in a strange gown, and Demande reveals he wants the Silver Crystal to rule time and space, intending to make her his queen. He moves to kiss her, but Tuxedo Mask arrives and, aided by a covert strike from a jealous Esmeraude, escapes with Usagi. Saphir afterward confronts Esmeraude over her sabotage and warns that Demande will punish her once he learns the truth.

Drawing on Acts 20 and 21, the episode diverges from the manga in numerous ways. There the group meets Diana, who joins them, and only Tuxedo Mask, Sailor Moon, Venus, Chibiusa, Luna, and Artemis hear Endymion's account, since Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter have already been captured. The future guardians lie comatose rather than defending the palace, Usagi frees herself and the other captives without rescue while destabilizing Nemesis, and Saphir attempts to kill her.

Various dub edits altered the tone. The DiC version cut Demande's hand on Usagi's shoulder and Mars's reaction to the parentage reveal, while the Viz dub gave King Endymion a distinct, deeper voice and reworked several lines. Usagi's captive gown resembles Alphonse Mucha's Champenois print, though it differs in a few details from the gown Neo-Queen Serenity actually wears.
