From Outlaw to Frieza's Ranks

Cheelai's path to the Frieza Force was not one of loyalty or ambition but simple survival. After stealing a Galactic Patrol spaceship, she needed protection from her pursuers and found it by enlisting under Frieza, a leader she had never actually met and knew only through fearsome rumors. She was partnered with Lemo, a veteran rear guard soldier, and tasked with scouting planets for powerful fighters to replenish the army's depleted ranks.

It was during one of these scouting missions that Cheelai and Lemo discovered Broly and his father Paragus stranded on the desolate planet Vampa. Cheelai took an immediate interest in Broly, recognizing something gentle beneath his immense power. She was sassy, opinionated, and quick to stand up against authority, traits that put her at odds with Paragus and his harsh treatment of his son. When Paragus revealed that he controlled Broly through a shock collar device, Cheelai stole and destroyed the remote without hesitation.

Her instinct to protect others without considering the consequences defined her character. She theorized that Broly did not actually enjoy fighting and that Paragus only viewed him as a weapon for revenge against King Vegeta. This emotional intelligence, combined with her willingness to act decisively, set her apart from the obedient soldiers around her.

Saving Broly and Starting Over

When Broly's power spiraled out of control during his battle against Goku and Vegeta on Earth, Cheelai made the bold decision to use the Dragon Balls to save him. She had collected them during the chaos and used her wish to transport Broly back to Vampa before Gogeta could deliver a fatal blow. It was an impulsive act that perfectly captured her character: reckless, compassionate, and entirely driven by her emotional bond with someone she refused to abandon.

After the battle, Cheelai and Lemo chose to live on Vampa alongside Broly rather than return to the Frieza Force. The three formed an unlikely family unit on the barren planet, with Cheelai and Lemo providing the social connection and care that Broly had been denied his entire life. When Goku arrived to deliver supplies and offer friendship, Cheelai was initially skeptical of his motives but eventually warmed to him. She appears again in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, where Broly is shown training on Beerus's planet while she continues to watch over his wellbeing. Their bond represents one of the franchise's most genuine examples of found family.
