Cooler is the elder brother of Frieza and a powerful member of the Frieza Race. He serves as the main antagonist in two Dragon Ball Z films, where he seeks revenge against the Saiyan who defeated his brother. Cooler distinguishes himself from Frieza through his more disciplined fighting style and his exclusive fifth transformation.
Cooler first appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge. Unlike his brother, Cooler was aware that a Saiyan infant had escaped Planet Vegeta's destruction but chose not to pursue the child, considering it beneath his concern. Years later, after Frieza's defeat on Namek, Cooler traveled to Earth with his elite Armored Squadron to restore his family's honor by destroying the Saiyan responsible.
On Earth, Cooler revealed his signature advantage over Frieza: a fifth transformation that his brother had never achieved. In this form, Cooler's power exceeded Frieza's maximum, and he nearly killed Goku. However, Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan and overpowered Cooler, blasting him into the sun with a Kamehameha wave.
Cooler returned in the sequel film, The Return of Cooler. His remains had fused with the Big Gete Star, a massive mechanical planet, giving him a new metallic body and the ability to create hundreds of copies of himself. Goku and Vegeta were forced to work together to destroy the Big Gete Star's core, finally ending Cooler for good.
Though Cooler is not part of the main manga continuity, he has appeared in numerous video games, the Dragon Ball Heroes arcade series, and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero featured a brief reference to Frieza's family. His popularity among fans has kept him relevant in franchise merchandise and media for decades.
Cooler's most notable distinction from Frieza is his ability to transform beyond Frieza's final form into a fifth stage. This transformation increases his body mass significantly, adds a protective bio-mask over his face, and elevates his power to levels that can compete with a Super Saiyan. His fighting style in this form is more aggressive and physically imposing than Frieza's sleek approach.
His signature techniques include the Supernova, a massive energy sphere similar to the one Frieza used to destroy Planet Vegeta, and the Death Beam, a rapid-fire precision attack shared across his family. Cooler is also shown to be a more tactically minded fighter than his brother, preferring to analyze opponents before committing to full power rather than relying on arrogance.
