Goku Black is an alternate version of the Kai named Zamasu who used the Super Dragon Balls to steal Goku's body. Driven by a fanatical hatred of mortals, Black waged a campaign of genocide across Future Trunks' timeline alongside his counterpart Future Zamasu. He stands as one of Dragon Ball Super's most popular and terrifying antagonists.
The being known as Goku Black began as Zamasu, the North Kai of Universe 10 and apprentice to Supreme Kai Gowasu. Zamasu harbored a deep distrust of mortals, viewing them as violent and unworthy of the life the gods had given them. After encountering Goku during a sparring match and being humiliated by a mortal's strength, Zamasu's hatred crystallized into a plan for universal genocide that he called the "Zero Mortals Plan."
Using the Time Ring, Zamasu gathered the Super Dragon Balls and wished to swap bodies with Goku, gaining the Saiyan's immense physical power while retaining his own divine knowledge and ki control. He then murdered the Goku trapped in his old body, along with Chi-Chi and Goten. Afterward, Black traveled to Future Trunks' timeline, where he allied with that era's version of Zamasu and began systematically slaughtering all mortal life.
Future Trunks escaped to the main timeline and sought help from Goku and Vegeta. The heroes traveled back and forth between timelines, engaging Black and Future Zamasu in increasingly desperate battles. Black grew stronger with every encounter, exploiting the Saiyan body's ability to adapt and improve through combat. He eventually achieved Super Saiyan Rose, a pink-tinted divine transformation unique to a god inhabiting a Saiyan form.
The conflict escalated when Black and Future Zamasu fused into Merged Zamasu using the Potara earrings. Even after the fusion began to destabilize due to the contradiction between Zamasu's immortal half and Black's mortal body, the threat was so great that Future Trunks had to rally the surviving humans' energy into a Spirit Sword to bisect the fused being. Ultimately, Zamasu attempted to become one with the universe itself, forcing Future Zeno to erase the entire timeline to stop him.
Goku Black possessed a devastating combination of divine ki mastery and Saiyan biology. He could use all of Goku's techniques, including the Kamehameha and Instant Transmission, while augmenting them with his own godly energy. His signature technique was the Black Power Ball, a compressed sphere of dark energy, and later the Violent Fierce God Slicer, an energy blade formed from his hand that could cut through nearly anything.
What made Black uniquely dangerous was his ability to grow stronger at an accelerated rate. Each time he took damage, the Saiyan body's Zenkai-like adaptation combined with his divine understanding of ki to produce rapid power gains. A fight that started with Black as an equal to Super Saiyan 2 Goku ended with him surpassing Super Saiyan Blue within days.
Super Saiyan Rose represents one of the most visually striking transformations in the franchise. Unlike the golden aura of a standard Super Saiyan or the blue of Super Saiyan Blue, Rose produces a deep pink glow that reflects the corrupted divine energy of a fallen god. In this form, Black was strong enough to fight both Goku and Vegeta simultaneously.
Goku Black works as a villain because he inverts everything the audience knows about Goku. He wears the hero's face and fights with the hero's body, but his soul is that of a zealot who believes mortals are a cosmic mistake. The horror of watching Goku's body commit atrocities, killing innocent people, destroying cities, and speaking with cold theological certainty about the righteousness of genocide, gave the Future Trunks Saga an emotional weight that few Dragon Ball arcs have matched.
Black also explores the concept of divine arrogance. Zamasu's plan was not born from personal ambition but from a genuine, if twisted, belief that he was serving the greater good. He saw himself as the only god willing to do what was necessary, making him a philosophical villain in a franchise that typically deals in simpler moral terms. His fall from grace mirrors real-world patterns of extremism, where noble ideals curdle into justifications for violence.
