Grand Elder Guru is the oldest and wisest Namekian alive during the events of the Namek Saga. As the patriarch who single-handedly repopulated the Namekian race after a catastrophic climate disaster, he also created the Namekian Dragon Balls and served as the link that kept them active.
Guru was one of the few survivors of a devastating climate shift that nearly wiped out all life on Planet Namek centuries before the events of the series. The only other known survivor was the Nameless Namekian, who was sent to Earth as a child and would later split into Kami and King Piccolo. With his species on the brink of extinction, Guru took on the enormous task of repopulation, birthing 109 children through the Namekian reproductive process of producing eggs. Among his offspring were notable figures such as Nail, his personal bodyguard, the young Dende, and Moori, who would eventually succeed him as Grand Elder.
By the time Frieza arrived on Namek seeking the Dragon Balls, Guru was incredibly old and largely immobile. His body had grown to an enormous size, towering over his children even while seated on his throne-like chair. Despite his physical limitations, his mind remained sharp, and he possessed the unique ability to unlock the dormant potential within individuals by placing his hand on their heads. He used this power on both Krillin and Gohan, dramatically increasing their fighting strength during a critical moment in the conflict against Frieza's forces.
Guru was also the creator of the Namekian Dragon Balls and the dragon Porunga. This creation came with a significant condition: if Guru died, the Dragon Balls would turn to stone and become inert. This ticking clock added tremendous urgency to the battle on Namek, as the heroes needed both the Dragon Balls and Guru's survival to make their wishes.
As Frieza's assault on Namek intensified, Guru's health deteriorated rapidly. The grief of witnessing his children being slaughtered by Frieza's soldiers weighed heavily on him, accelerating his natural decline. He sent Dende to assist the Earthlings and entrusted Nail with the desperate task of delaying Frieza. When Guru finally passed away, the Namekian Dragon Balls turned to stone immediately, cutting short a critical wish that could have turned the tide of battle.
However, the Earth Dragon Balls were used to revive everyone killed by Frieza and his forces on Namek, which brought Guru back to life briefly. In this narrow window, Guru transferred his role as Grand Elder to Moori, ensuring that the Namekian Dragon Balls would not die with him a second time. He then passed away peacefully, this time of natural causes, having secured the future of both his people and their sacred artifacts.
Guru's influence extends far beyond his lifetime. His ability to awaken hidden potential directly shaped the power levels of key fighters during the Frieza conflict. The Dragon Balls he created continued to play pivotal roles throughout Dragon Ball Z, Super, and GT, and the leadership structure he established through Moori ensured the Namekian people would endure and thrive on New Namek.
