Hatchiyack

Character

Hatchiyack is a Tuffle superweapon powered by the collective hatred of the Tuffle race against the Saiyans who destroyed them. Originally appearing in the 1993 OVA "Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans" and its 2010 remake, Hatchiyack is a manifestation of an entire civilization's desire for vengeance, condensed into a single devastating combat machine.

Origin and Purpose

The Tuffles were a technologically advanced race that shared Planet Vegeta (then known as Planet Plant) with the Saiyans. When the Saiyans rose up and exterminated the Tuffles, Dr. Lychee, a surviving Tuffle scientist, created Hatchiyack as the ultimate instrument of revenge. The machine was designed to collect and amplify the grudge energy of all deceased Tuffles, growing stronger as their hatred intensified over the centuries.

Hatchiyack first manifested through Dr. Lychee's ghost, a phantom projection that spread Destron Gas across Earth to weaken the planet's defenders. When the Z Fighters tracked the source of the gas and confronted Lychee, the scientist's ghost was destroyed, but the Hatchiyack machine activated in response. It absorbed Lychee's remaining grudge energy and materialized as a massive, humanoid combat form, channeling the concentrated rage of an extinct civilization.

Battle and Defeat

In its materialized form, Hatchiyack proved to be extraordinarily powerful, capable of fighting Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, and Piccolo simultaneously. Its Revenger Cannon, a devastating beam attack charged by Tuffle hatred, was powerful enough to seriously threaten even Super Saiyan fighters. Goku noted that Hatchiyack might be as strong as Broly, placing it among the most powerful opponents they had faced at that point in the timeline.

The Z Fighters eventually identified Hatchiyack's weakness: the charging time required for the Revenger Cannon. During the brief window while the weapon charged, Hatchiyack was vulnerable to a coordinated counterattack. The five fighters timed their combined energy blasts to strike during this opening, overwhelming Hatchiyack's defenses and destroying the machine.

Hatchiyack occupies a fascinating niche in Dragon Ball lore as a weapon born from historical injustice. The Tuffles were genuinely wronged by the Saiyans, and their desire for revenge is understandable. This makes Hatchiyack one of the few antagonists in the franchise whose motivation carries moral complexity, even if the machine itself is incapable of moral reasoning. It exists purely as a conduit for grief and anger, a weapon that cannot negotiate, surrender, or be reasoned with.
