Role in the Story

King Chappa enters the series as a fighter of considerable renown. Before the events of Dragon Ball, he won the World Martial Arts Tournament by defeating every opponent without allowing any of them to touch him, a feat that earned him widespread respect in the martial arts community.

At the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, King Chappa competes in the preliminary rounds and is widely expected to advance. However, Goku defeats him with ease during the preliminaries, demonstrating just how far beyond normal human fighters the young Saiyan has already grown. King Chappa returns for the 23rd Tournament as well, but is eliminated by Tambourine before the tournament even takes place, as King Piccolo's spawn hunts martial artists across the world.

Despite being outclassed by the superhuman fighters who dominate the later tournaments, King Chappa remains a skilled martial artist by Earthling standards. He teaches martial arts after retiring from competition, and in some continuities, he takes on Uub as a student before Uub eventually trains under Goku himself.
