Drawing Lines in the Sand

The 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament kicks off with the preliminary rounds, and the Turtle School students are ready to prove themselves. Fighters draw their numbers to determine matchups, and the action begins immediately. Yamcha dispatches a showboating mohawked fighter with a single elbow strike, and Krillin handles the massive pro wrestler Antoine the Great by hurling him out of the ring with one hand.

But the real tension comes from the Crane School. Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu make their presence known, mocking the Turtle students and their techniques. Tien claims he could have killed Goku during their previous encounter in the wilderness, and the two schools nearly come to blows before Jackie Chun intervenes with a reminder about disqualification rules.

Tien then demonstrates his own power by destroying a sumo wrestler with a barrage of strikes so fast that only the trained eye can count them. The episode closes with Goku stepping into the ring against the legendary King Chappa, a former champion who won his last tournament without taking a single hit.

Turtle Meets Crane

The standoff between Yamcha and Tien crackles with genuine hostility, elevating the stakes beyond simple competition. When Tien points out the weak spot Yamcha deliberately avoided in his fight, it reveals how observant and dangerous the three-eyed fighter truly is.

Master Shen's confrontation with Bulma and Launch outside the arena provides dark comedy, particularly when Launch opens fire and Shen catches every bullet before calmly walking away with a funeral warning. Krillin's effortless takedown of Antoine the Great also stands out, showcasing just how far Roshi's students have come since the last tournament.

The Crane School Arrives

This episode marks the formal introduction of the Turtle vs. Crane rivalry that defines the entire Tien Shinhan Saga. Tien and Chiaotzu are established as genuine threats from the start, with Tien's dismissal of the Turtle students' victories foreshadowing the brutal encounters ahead.

King Chappa's appearance as Goku's preliminary opponent is notable. He is a former tournament champion whose Eight-Arm Fist technique becomes relevant in the next episode. The episode also connects back to Goku's earlier encounter with Tien during the InoShikaCho incident.
