The Angel in Disguise

Merus is the son of the Grand Minister and the younger sibling of Whis, which places him among the most powerful beings in the multiverse by birth. However, unlike his fellow Angels who maintain strict neutrality in mortal affairs, Merus developed a sense of justice and a desire to actively protect the innocent. He joined the Galactic Patrol under a mortal guise, wearing their uniform and operating as their top agent, a role that allowed him to intervene in conflicts without drawing the attention of the angelic hierarchy. His combat skills, even while suppressed to mortal levels, made him exceptional among the Patrol's ranks. He wielded a specialized weapon and demonstrated tactical abilities far beyond those of his colleagues.

Training Goku

When the ancient sorcerer Moro escaped from the Galactic Patrol prison, Merus recognized that only Goku had the potential to stop him, provided the Saiyan could master Ultra Instinct. Merus trained Goku inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, pushing him to access the autonomous movement state consistently. During this training, Merus carefully avoided using his full angelic power, knowing that doing so would alert the Grand Minister and result in his erasure. His teaching methods focused on helping Goku understand that Ultra Instinct was not merely a transformation but a state of being, where the body acts independently of conscious thought.

Sacrifice and Rebirth

When Moro threatened to destroy the Earth and Goku's Ultra Instinct faltered, Merus chose to intervene directly. He used his angelic powers to shatter Moro's stolen abilities, knowing that this violation of the Angel code would erase him from existence. True to the rules, Merus began to fade from reality, but his sacrifice gave Goku the opening needed to achieve Perfected Ultra Instinct and defeat Moro. The Grand Minister, moved by Merus's conviction, chose to revive him, but as a mortal rather than an Angel. Stripped of his divine power, Merus continued serving the Galactic Patrol, now fully committed to the mortal life he had chosen. His story represents one of the few instances in Dragon Ball where a divine being willingly surrendered immortality and infinite power for the sake of mortal values.
