Nam is a humble martial artist from a drought-stricken village who entered the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament not for glory or pride, but to win the prize money and buy water for his dying community. His selfless motivation made him one of the most sympathetic competitors in the original Dragon Ball series.
Nam came from a desert village on the verge of collapse due to a devastating drought. With no other options, he traveled to the World Martial Arts Tournament, hoping that the prize money would be enough to purchase the water his people desperately needed. This motivation set him apart from every other competitor; while fighters like Goku, Krillin, and Jackie Chun fought for the thrill of competition or to test their skills, Nam fought out of pure necessity.
During the tournament, Nam proved to be a skilled and dedicated fighter. He advanced through the early rounds with techniques that reflected his training in a practical, survival-oriented style. His signature move, the Cross Arm Dive, involved leaping high into the air and descending with his arms crossed in front of him to deliver a powerful diving strike. He used this technique in his semi-final match against Goku, but the young fighter recovered from the impact and knocked Nam out of the ring.
After his defeat, Nam was despondent, believing he had failed his village. Master Roshi, moved by the man's selfless dedication, lent him a capsule and directed him to a source of water that could save his community. Roshi also gave Nam a storage capsule to carry the water back. This act of generosity by the Turtle Hermit resolved Nam's crisis without the prize money, and Nam returned home with enough water to sustain his village.
Nam appeared briefly in later arcs, including the King Piccolo saga, where he was among the martial artists attacked by the Demon King's forces. His role in the larger Dragon Ball story is small, but his presence at the first tournament humanized the competition and demonstrated that the World Martial Arts Tournament drew fighters from all walks of life, each carrying their own burdens and reasons for fighting.
