The tournament quarterfinals kick off with Krillin facing the foul Bacterian, a fighter who weaponizes his lifelong refusal to bathe. Goku's timely reminder helps Krillin turn the tide.
With the eight finalists assembled, lots are drawn for the quarterfinal matchups. Krillin lands the worst possible draw: a first-round bout against Bacterian, a massive fighter infamous for never having bathed in his entire life. The remaining matches pit Jackie Chun against Yamcha, Nam against Ranfan, and Goku against the fearsome Giran.
From the opening bell, Bacterian assaults Krillin not with fists but with weaponized filth. He breathes toxic fumes in Krillin's face, rubs his unwashed hands on him, stomps on him repeatedly, and unleashes a devastating fart at point-blank range. The crowd recoils in disgust as Krillin is pinned to the ground, unable to fight back against the overwhelming stench.
Just as all seems lost, Goku shouts from the sidelines that Krillin is only imagining the smell, since he does not have a nose. The realization snaps Krillin out of his daze. He dodges Bacterian's final attack, a horrifying glob of spit, kicks him square in the chest, and delivers his own brand of payback with a well-placed fart to Bacterian's face. The disgusted giant surrenders, and Krillin claims his first tournament victory.
The Krillin vs. Bacterian fight is pure comedic spectacle. Every one of Bacterian's attacks is designed to gross out both his opponent and the audience, from the "Smelly Finger" to the absurdly named "Deep Throated Mucus Filled Loagie of Death." The humor works because the stakes underneath are real: Krillin is genuinely losing until Goku's observation saves him.
Goku's reminder that Krillin has no nose is one of the series' most iconic gag moments. It is both a callback to Krillin's unique character design and a genuinely clever plot device that turns the entire match around in an instant.
This episode officially introduces several key tournament fighters. Nam, the humble warrior fighting for his drought-stricken village, and Ranfan, a skilled fighter who uses seduction as a weapon, both make their first full appearances alongside the monstrous Giran. The quarterfinal bracket is now set, and the mysterious Jackie Chun looms over the competition.
