Nappa is a powerful Saiyan elite warrior and longtime partner of Vegeta. As one of the few Saiyans to survive the destruction of Planet Vegeta, Nappa served as Vegeta's subordinate for years before their fateful invasion of Earth, where his overwhelming power terrorized the Dragon Team.
Nappa was a high-ranking Saiyan general who served under King Vegeta before the destruction of their homeworld. After Frieza annihilated Planet Vegeta, Nappa became one of the last surviving members of the race, alongside Vegeta and Raditz. He continued to serve within the Frieza Force, conquering planets and selling them under Frieza's empire.
When Raditz's scouter transmitted information about the Dragon Balls on Earth, Nappa traveled there with Vegeta, seeking to wish for immortality. After the Saibamen failed to eliminate Earth's fighters, Nappa took over the battle personally. He proved devastating, killing several of Earth's defenders in rapid succession. Tien Shinhan, Piccolo, and Chiaotzu all fell during the battle, with Piccolo sacrificing himself to shield Gohan from one of Nappa's attacks.
When Goku finally arrived, the dynamic shifted completely. Goku had trained under King Kai and returned with a power level that dwarfed Nappa's. After being humiliated in combat, Nappa was left crippled and useless. Vegeta, disgusted by this display of weakness, executed his own partner without hesitation, demonstrating the ruthless pragmatism that defined early Vegeta.
At the time of his arrival on Earth, Nappa was one of the strongest beings the Dragon Team had ever faced. His power level of roughly 4,000 made him exponentially stronger than anyone on the planet except for the returning Goku. He could generate powerful shockwaves by simply raising two fingers, destroy cities with casual energy blasts, and withstand attacks that would obliterate lesser fighters.
Despite his relatively brief appearance, Nappa's impact on the series was enormous. He was the first villain to permanently kill multiple heroes on screen, raising the stakes dramatically and establishing that Dragon Ball Z would be far more intense than its predecessor. The deaths he caused directly motivated the Dragon Team to seek out the Namekian Dragon Balls, setting the entire Frieza Saga in motion.
Nappa also serves as an important narrative device for Vegeta's character. His casual execution at Vegeta's hands revealed how little the Saiyan prince valued loyalty when it came without strength, a philosophy Vegeta would gradually abandon over the course of the series.
