Porunga is the Eternal Dragon of Planet Namek, created by Grand Elder Guru. Considerably more powerful than Earth's Shenron, Porunga can grant three wishes per summoning and possesses the ability to revive the same individual multiple times, making him one of the most valuable wish-granting entities in the Dragon Ball universe.
Porunga's name translates from the Namekian language as "Dragon of Dreams" or "Dragon of Law," though Dende has also referred to him as the "God of Love" and "Maker of Dreams" in various translations. He is summoned using the seven Namekian Dragon Balls, which are considerably larger than their Earth counterparts, each one roughly the size of a basketball. The summoning ritual must be spoken in the Namekian language, a requirement that initially caused problems for the Z Fighters on Namek since Dende was the only one present who could communicate with Porunga.
Physically, Porunga is far more imposing than Shenron. Where Shenron resembles a serpentine Eastern dragon, Porunga has a muscular, almost humanoid upper body combined with a dragon's lower form. He is bulkier, more aggressive in appearance, and radiates an aura of raw power that reflects the greater capabilities built into the Namekian Dragon Balls by Guru.
Porunga's most significant advantage over Shenron is his ability to grant three wishes per summoning rather than just one, and his power to resurrect the same person more than once. These capabilities made the Namekian Dragon Balls an essential resource throughout the series, particularly during and after the Frieza conflict when multiple revivals were needed.
Porunga first appeared during the Frieza Saga on Planet Namek, where the race to summon him became a central plot point. Frieza, Vegeta, and the Earth warriors all competed to gather the Namekian Dragon Balls, each faction pursuing different goals. When Porunga was finally summoned, the wishes made in rapid succession included reviving Piccolo and transporting him to Namek, directly influencing the course of the battle against Frieza.
Following the destruction of Namek, the Namekian Dragon Balls and Porunga accompanied the surviving Namekians to New Namek. From that point forward, Porunga became a recurring figure whenever the Earth Dragon Balls proved insufficient for a particular task. During the Majin Buu Saga, Porunga was summoned to restore Earth and revive its people after Kid Buu destroyed the planet. His ability to grant multiple wishes in a single summoning made him the practical choice for large-scale restoration efforts.
In Dragon Ball Super, Porunga was used to separate Kibito Kai back into Shin and Kibito, proving that even Potara Fusion could be undone with sufficient wish-granting power. The Namekian Dragon Balls also played a role in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga. Porunga's continued relevance throughout the franchise underscores how the Namekian Dragon Balls have often served as the more powerful and flexible alternative to Earth's set, with Porunga himself standing as a symbol of Namekian craftsmanship and divine heritage.
