Whis first appeared alongside Beerus when the God of Destruction awakened from a long slumber searching for the Super Saiyan God. As Beerus's attendant, Whis acts as both his keeper and his superior in combat, though his role as an Angel forbids him from fighting unless the universe's balance is truly at stake. He is the son of the Grand Priest, making him part of an angelic hierarchy that oversees the fundamental structure of the multiverse.

After Goku and Vegeta impressed Beerus with their fighting spirit, Whis agreed to train them. His training methods focused on achieving total self-awareness and eliminating unnecessary thoughts during combat, principles that later formed the foundation of Ultra Instinct. Whis taught the Saiyans to move and react without conscious deliberation, though mastering this concept took Goku many arcs to achieve.

Throughout Dragon Ball Super, Whis acted as a guide, occasional comic relief, and a reminder of how much further the mortal fighters had to go. His ability to rewind time by three minutes saved Earth from Frieza's destruction during the Golden Frieza Saga, and he provided crucial tactical observations during the Tournament of Power. Despite his immense power, Whis maintained strict neutrality as mandated by angelic law.

Whis possesses power that places him firmly above Beerus, making him one of the strongest beings in Universe 7 and among the top fighters in all twelve universes. His speed is such that he can travel between planets in minutes and dodge attacks effortlessly. He has mastered Ultra Instinct to a degree that Goku has only begun to approach, and he can use his staff to project events happening across the universe.

Among his most notable abilities is Temporal Do-Over, which allows him to reverse time by up to three minutes. He can also materialize objects, create pocket dimensions for training, and render beings unconscious with a simple tap. His staff functions as both a communication device and a viewing screen for observing distant events.

As an Angel, Whis exists in a unique position within the cosmic hierarchy. He is bound by laws that prevent him from directly intervening in mortal affairs unless instructed by Zeno or the Grand Priest. If his God of Destruction is killed, Whis becomes inactive until a replacement is appointed. This limitation means that despite his overwhelming strength, Whis functions primarily as an observer, advisor, and trainer rather than a combatant.
