The Beast and the Boy

A rainstorm delays the fourth quarterfinal match, and the fighters retreat to a nearby restaurant. There, Giran intimidates the Orin Temple monks and nearly starts a brawl with Yamcha before Jackie Chun intervenes. When the weather clears the next day, Goku almost misses his match by falling asleep in a corner of the stadium. He is dragged to the ring with barely seconds to spare.

Giran's Tricks

The fight begins with Giran landing a cheap shot on the distracted Goku. After absorbing the hit, Goku hurls Giran out of the ring, but the winged creature simply flies back in. Giran then spits Merry-Go-Round Gum around Goku, encasing him in unbreakable purple rings. Helpless and bound, Goku is thrown high into the air and out of the arena entirely.

The Tail Returns

Goku summons the Flying Nimbus to land safely back in the ring, a move the judges narrowly allow on the condition he not use it again. As Giran charges in for the finish, Goku's tail suddenly regenerates. With his balance and power restored, Goku shatters the Merry-Go-Round Gum with raw strength. Giran, witnessing the impossible, immediately surrenders. It is the first forfeit in World Martial Arts Tournament finals history, and Goku advances to the semifinals.

Dirty Tricks and Determination

The restaurant scene does excellent work establishing Giran as a legitimate threat before the fight even starts. His casual brutality toward the Orin Temple monks and his willingness to challenge Yamcha paint him as dangerous and unpredictable. The fact that Goku nearly sleeps through his own match adds a layer of comedy that contrasts perfectly with the serious battle ahead.

A Tail's Worth

Goku's tail regeneration is the episode's defining moment. The appendage he lost at Pilaf's Castle returns at the exact moment he needs it most, shattering the gum that had him completely trapped. Giran's immediate surrender sells the transformation as truly terrifying from an opponent's perspective.

Milestones and Monster Lore

Giran becomes the first fighter in tournament history to surrender during the finals. Goku's tail, previously severed by Puar during the Pilaf Saga, regenerates for the first time, establishing that Saiyan tails can grow back. The Flying Nimbus ruling also sets a precedent for how the tournament handles external tools and abilities in competition.
