Chiaotzu's secret paralysis is exposed, and Tien forces him to stop, refusing to win through cheating. When Shen orders Chiaotzu to freeze both fighters, Roshi blasts Shen out of the arena with a Kamehameha. Free from his master, Tien sprouts two extra arms.
The mystery of Goku's paralysis is solved. Chiaotzu has been using his telekinesis on Shen's orders, freezing Goku in midair whenever he gains the upper hand. The interference happens repeatedly, with Goku being locked in place, beaten, recovering, attacking, and then being frozen again. Yamcha spots Chiaotzu's hands raised during one of the paralysis moments and shouts the truth to everyone.
The turning point of the saga arrives. Tien realizes he has been winning too easily and figures out that Chiaotzu is helping him. Rather than accept the tainted advantage, Tien demands that Chiaotzu stop, declaring that he wants to defeat Goku in a fair fight. This single decision represents Tien's break from Shen's philosophy of winning at any cost.
Shen, enraged by the defiance, orders Chiaotzu to paralyze both Tien and Goku. Chiaotzu refuses to hurt his best friend. Shen moves to kill Chiaotzu, but Launch attacks with a hammer. Shen flicks her aside effortlessly, but Master Roshi steps in and blasts Shen out of the arena with a Kamehameha. With the Crane Hermit gone, Tien is mentally free for the first time. He allows Goku to pummel him as payback for the paralysis rounds, then begins powering up. Two extra arms sprout from his back as he prepares the Four Witches Technique.
Tien's refusal to accept a cheated victory is the moment Roshi predicted. Everything the old master said about Tien having a conscience, about being destined for something greater than assassination, comes true in this single act of defiance. The dramatic irony is powerful: Shen's attempt to secure victory actually drives his best student away.
Roshi's Kamehameha against Shen is cathartic, resolving the hermit rivalry that has simmered since the saga began. Launch's unsuccessful but brave hammer attack against Shen shows the Turtle School's loyalty extends beyond its fighters. Tien's decision to let Goku hit him freely as compensation for the paralysis rounds demonstrates a sense of honor that Shen never taught him.
This episode is Tien Shinhan's redemption arc compressed into a single pivotal moment. His refusal to cheat, his protection of Chiaotzu, and his break from Shen transform him from antagonist to antihero in the span of minutes. It validates every seed Roshi planted throughout their previous encounters.
The Four Witches Technique, previewed at the episode's end with Tien sprouting extra arms, is a Crane School technique that shows Tien has not abandoned his training, only his master's corrupt philosophy. Shen's expulsion from the tournament grounds clears the stage for a clean final battle between Goku and Tien.
