Three Years Later

The three-year timeskip has concluded, and the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament draws fighters from across the globe to Papaya Island. Master Roshi and Launch arrive first and wait for the others, who are all running late. Oolong, Puar, and Bulma show up, with Bulma sporting a completely new look. A little girl's balloon gets stuck, and a mysterious tall young man retrieves it for Bulma, calling her by name. Nobody recognizes him until he removes his turban, revealing the unmistakable spiky hair of Goku, now dramatically taller and older.

Reunions and Revelations

With just one minute left before registration closes, Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu arrive in a rush. Krillin is proud of having grown taller until Goku walks up and towers over him by at least two heads. The two best friends embrace, and Krillin finally gets to thank Goku in person for bringing him back to life. Roshi reveals he will not enter the tournament this time. That night, lightning strikes the town clock tower, and Piccolo Jr. mysteriously saves a mother and child from the falling debris. The next morning, as the preliminaries begin, Goku spots Piccolo in the crowd. Tien recognizes him too, and both understand the gravity of what his presence means.

Everyone Has Changed

The transformations extend beyond Goku. Bulma has a new hairstyle and wardrobe. Yamcha has regained his long hair and bears new facial scars. Krillin, though taller, is still the shortest of the fighters. Goku explains that Kami removed his tail so the moon could be restored, closing the door on his Great Ape transformations. Roshi's decision not to compete as Jackie Chun signals that the old guard has fully given way to the next generation.

Piccolo's Quiet Entrance

Piccolo saving the woman and her child the night before is an unexpected act that hints at a complexity beneath his inherited hatred. Whether it was instinct, curiosity, or something deeper, the gesture contrasts sharply with the ruthless Piccolo Jr. who burned an elderly couple's home as a newborn.

A New Era Begins

This episode marks the transition from child Goku to adult Goku, one of the most significant visual and narrative shifts in the series. The reunion scene carries emotional weight built over more than a hundred episodes of shared history. Piccolo Jr.'s arrival at the tournament confirms Kami's warning and sets the central conflict of the saga: Goku must defeat Piccolo without killing him, or the Dragon Balls will cease to exist.
