Goku and Vegeta assemble their tournament roster, recruiting Buu and Piccolo as the final two members. After a comedic misunderstanding with Krillin, the Saiyans head into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for three years of training before the big event.
Goku and Vegeta run into Krillin, who has been told by Android 18, who heard it from Chi-Chi, that the group is going on a picnic in outer space. After clearing up the misunderstanding, they discuss who should fill the remaining two spots on their five-person team. Goku suggests Buu and Piccolo. Vegeta counters with Gohan, but Goku notes his son has been focused on academics and is out of fighting shape.
Buu initially refuses to participate because he despises Beerus, but Goku persuades him by promising a wish from the Super Dragon Balls, which Buu intends to give to Mr. Satan. On Beerus's planet, Whis questions Beerus about his motivations for accepting the tournament, hinting at a deeper premonition, but Beerus deflects. The two depart to recruit the mysterious Monaka.
Back on Earth, Goten and Trunks volunteer, but Vegeta turns them down because their Fusion technique would violate the rules and they lack the individual strength needed. The group finds Piccolo training with Gohan and recruits the Namekian as the fifth member. Gohan cannot join due to a business meeting on the day of the tournament. With the roster locked, Goku proposes three years of training inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and Vegeta agrees, unwilling to let Goku gain any advantage.
Vegeta's rejection of Goten and Trunks is telling. He does not simply say Fusion is against the rules; he bluntly states they are not strong enough on their own. This is a rare moment of honest assessment from a father who usually deflects emotional honesty. The boys are sidelined not by age but by the gap between their potential and the threat level of an inter-universal tournament.
Gohan's absence is equally significant. His excuse, a business meeting, speaks volumes about where his priorities have shifted. The former child warrior who once held the fate of Earth in his hands now defers to a work obligation. It is a quiet but pointed commentary on how far Gohan has drifted from his fighting roots.
This episode completes the Universe 7 roster at five members: Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Buu, and Monaka. The team is already operating at a disadvantage, though the audience does not know it yet. Beerus's secrecy about Monaka and the looming question of whether Buu will actually cooperate plant doubt beneath the surface confidence. The Hyperbolic Time Chamber returns as a training tool, giving Goku and Vegeta three years of sparring in just three days of real time.
