Garlic Jr. escapes the Dead Zone and seizes Kami's Lookout with his Spice Boys, trapping both Kami and Mr. Popo in miniature bottles. With Earth's Guardian imprisoned, Garlic Jr. unleashes the Black Water Mist to enslave all of humanity.
With Goku still missing after the battle on Namek, life on Earth has settled into a comfortable rhythm. Gohan spends his days fishing and studying under Chi-Chi's watchful eye, while Krillin has found himself a girlfriend, the bubbly and somewhat oblivious Maron. An invitation to Turtle's birthday party at Kame House gives the gang something to celebrate, though Chi-Chi flatly refuses to let Gohan attend.
Far above the clouds, a very different conversation unfolds. Kami seeks out Piccolo in the frozen wastes of Yunzabit Heights, sensing that his old counterpart has changed enough to potentially serve as Earth's next Guardian. Piccolo declines, but warns Kami of a dark vision he experienced during meditation. That warning proves prophetic almost immediately.
While Kami is away, Garlic Jr. and his elite squad, the Spice Boys, storm the Lookout. Having escaped the Dead Zone through sheer force of will and immortal endurance, Garlic Jr. wastes no time. Mr. Popo is shrunk down and sealed in a glass bottle, and when Kami returns to confront the intruders, he suffers the same fate. With Earth's protector neutralized, Garlic Jr. uncorks the Black Water Mist, a sinister vapor capable of turning every living being on the planet into his obedient servant.
This premiere episode carries a heavy load of exposition, and it handles the task efficiently. The Dead Zone movie flashbacks quickly establish Garlic Jr. for viewers who may not have seen the film, while also reinforcing the stakes: this is a villain who already achieved immortality and nearly consumed the planet once before. His return feels earned rather than arbitrary, tied directly to his inability to die even within the void.
The decision to have Kami offer the Guardian role to Piccolo is a subtle but meaningful character beat. It acknowledges Piccolo's evolution from outright villain to reluctant protector, foreshadowing the deeper bond between them that will matter enormously in later arcs.
The Garlic Jr. Saga holds a unique place in Dragon Ball Z history as the only arc that is entirely anime-original filler with no manga counterpart whatsoever. Placed between the Frieza and Trunks sagas, it serves as a narrative bridge while Goku remains absent. This episode also marks several firsts for the Funimation dub, including the debut of the "Prelude to Conflict" opening theme, replacing the iconic "Rock the Dragon." Icarus the dragon, previously exclusive to the movies, makes his television series debut here as well.
